Lake Poway

About 4 miles from where I live, is Lake Poway ( pronouced pow-wee ). I have lived in my current home for over 15 years and yesteray late day was the first time I have ever visited there. It actually surprised me at how beautiful it was there. It is a small lake on a large parcel of land tucked away in an area of large and estate homes, none of which can actually be seen while at the lake.

Interestingly, I have listed and sold homes in the area of Old Town Poway which are more modest homes in the $600,000 and $700,000 price range. I love the old town area as it is just magical in it's interpretation of an old western town with an old railroad, restored and preserved buildings and just a wonderful park like atmosphere.

I met a gentleman that works on the pedal boat rental pier and he answered all of my many questions as it became apparent he knew so much about it. The first fact I learned while asking if there was a swimming area. No swimming here, it is the source for all the water used in the City of Poway. In fact no human skin contact is allowed.

After I photo captured a few of the more intersting views and features there, I observed a large banner that advised about the Summer Concert series that starts tomorrow, Jun 28th at 5:30 PM. I am free in the late day tomorrow and I expect I may return and check this out.

In the mean time, I will do some research on Lake Poway and write a post describing how it came to be and more details and photos about it. Here is a photo I took of one of the more unusual ducks that occupy the lake, along with the stocked lake of bass and catfish.

This duck has a fluffy feathered crown and I can't remember ever having seen one before. I think it is a female as she seemed to have a boyfriend or husband?? that also had a smaller crown that looked like a big knob and was a distinct black and white color.

Hi Dorie Dillard , I thought you might like to see the female duck's boyfriend. He was a bit further out but he has that same neck color and flipped up tail feathers.

William, isn't it great when you find something new, that is so close to you? New to you I should say. I love it! I also love the research that goes along with these finds.

I have never seen a duck like that. What a great photo, as usual.

I will look forward to your information on the history of Lake Poway, as well as more photos!

William,

What lovely photos, and thanks for the introduction to Lake Poway.  I have not seen a duck like that.

Are you experience cold weather in your neck of the woods?  The temperature is going down rapidly, we actually wore sweaters for our beach walk.  A

Hi Sharon Lee , Thank you and I am asking the neighbors if they want to go too. They are the ones that suggested that I go and check it out. It is  a little hard to believe that I have never been there before. The place is lush because they have their own water and use it keep it lush and green.

Hi Andrea Swiedler , the place is really a little treasure. I have an idea I will visit there and check out the over 5 miles in trails. Besides the ducks I did see a bird that I had never seen before as well. The place is really worth exploring.

The fuzzy head duck is a domesticated one.  Know in some circles as a roan.  Many have the looks of a mallard duck, but usually much laarger and seldom able to fly.

Hi David Shamansky , I have heard pronounced that way most of the time. I guess people don't know unless they live there.  I was watching a show " All About San Diego" and the area was named after the Poway Indian Tribe. Correctly pronounced Pow-Wee.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel , no, it has been quiye warm. It was cloudy today and in the low 70's and a real relief. It does get cooler at night and is great sleeping weather.

Hi Andrea Swiedler , I feel a bit embarassed that knowing so much about San Diego that I never checked this place out before. There is a lot of information and in upcoming posts I will reveal many of my findings. The lake area is really lush and so green as opposed to rest of San Diego that is as the say, "Brown is the new Green". The topography is rolling with picnic tables and fire pits and grilling areas. All the benches are made from from recycled plastic milk bottles. The whole place is a little treasure.

Hi William Feela , thanks for the information. While I was walking around, one young couple was even walking a sheep on a leash. Certainly hadn't encountered that before either. The late day was full of surprises,

I'm a duck fan and I've never seen one with a crown like that, very unique. Reminds me of a laurel wreath. Thanks for sharing William Johnson.

Hi Nancy Laswick , William Feela mentioned above that he thought this was a domesticated duck and it is called a Roan.

I remember your writing about Poway before.  While I've never been there, I've been fascinated by the place through your blogs.  This picture of the ducks is nicely composed.  I don't recall ever seeing one with a crown like that either!  Perhaps they have a new "stylist" in the neighborhood!

Very nice of the ducks to all line up in a row for their photo. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is only a few miles from my house. Once it cools down I'll have to take a look.
