On April 9, 2014 I joined a club that nobody wants to be a member of, the bereaved parents club. During my daughter's cancer treatment I started following other local kids on Facebook that were in their own battles. I drew a lot of my strength from the example these kids set, including my daughter Abby who was as relentless as they come. One of these kids was a teenage boy named Tyler. He was diagnosed with DIPG, an inoperable brain tumor a few months before Abby was diagnosed with her Leukemia. You probably never heard of DIPG until you were introduced to Lauren Hill, the college basketball player that lost her battle earlier this year. Tyler fought longer than the time he was given and lived by the mantra "whatever it takes", which became the battle cry for his family and supporters. After Tyler passed I had the pleasure of connecting with his father, Chris, while we were visiting our childrens' respective gravesites. We share a bond that we'd rather not share. We share a deep-rooted desire to see cancer eradicated from this planet. We share a disgust for the lack of funding for pediatric cancer research. We share a confusion as to how our kids that were otherwise healthy for the first years of their life can have that health suddenly snatched for them. The other thing we share is a drive to do something about it. I am happy to support Chris' efforts to provide more funding for DIPG research as this disease is currently terminal on diagnosis. On Monday, September 14th at Anthem Country Club the first annual Tyler Hallsey Golf Classic will take place.
