Do You Blindly Accept "Friend" Invitations?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

Almost every day I get an email telling me someone wants to connect on LinkedIn, has added me to circles on Google + or wants to be a friend on Facebook. Sometimes they want to connect on sites where I don't even have an account... which I think is strange.

Unless I already know the person from Active Rain, I've learned that it's best to go check before connecting, adding back, or friending.

  • Some of them are people who have yet to post anything that would say who or what they are.
  • Some of them have photos that best belong on a soft porn site.
  • Some communicate in a language I couldn't read if my life depended on it.
  • Some post political opinions or subject matter I would not want to be associated with.

For instance, last week I got notice that a lady real estate agent had added me to her Google circles. I almost clicked "add back," then thought "No, check first."

I'm glad I did!

Everything on her page was about "Sexy ladies." While I will admit that the ladies were shapely and attractive, I'm not into looking at bodies, and I really don't need people in their underware hanging out on my real estate copywriting pages.

I'd really be curious to know more about the people in her real estate niche. But no, not curious enough to ask.

Do you always check first?

Joanna Cohlan I've always thought it a little silly to say you're "friends" with someone you've never met, never spoken with, etc.

Wayne Martin I think we need to be a bit more selective - there are  a lot of "nuts" out there.

Bill Roberts I've declined a few on LinkedIn after looking at what they do - or don't do - for a living.

Kristin Johnston, Waukesha Realtor 414-254-6647 Thanks for stopping by.

Marte - I always do check on Linked In.  In fact need to first know them.  As for the others I probably should especially wit Twitter followers.

Marte Cliff The thing about LinkedIn is that these are all possible customers (clients) and referral sources. You don't need to like them to connect with them. It is just like having a store, you sell to all customers that come in whether you "like" them or not.

Grant Schneider Yes, some of those Twitter folks post some pretty strange comments.

Bill Roberts That's true, but my business is a little different from yours. There are some people I don't want as customers because my job is to promote them, not help them make a purchase or a decision.

For instance, I once turned down what would have been a lucrative job because my role would have been to rebuild the image of one of our most well-known dog fighting afficianados. No thanks. Anyone who trains dogs to maim and kill each other doesn't get my support.

I'm with you on this.  I always check folks out.  Also, it they have common connections -- I look to see who those folks are.

I have ignored and accepted, with no particular reason. I guess, I shouldn't. I once even had a problem, when I could not log in, and the platform was verifying that it was me, and they produced 3 photos of people, who are my "friends" so I was supposed to know who they were, but I did not really know them. Took me some image checking on Google so that I could satisfy the request.

I think I had that same request.  I laughed and showed it to Donald.  I always check.  Sometimes I even report.

Hi Marte, yes I always check first, especially on Google+. I think more of these newer accounts are run by hackers. I know on twitter, some profiles look ok and the next thing I know there are images I just don't want in my twitter feed.

In the very early days of Facebook and LinkedIn, it seems that I always "accepted." Then, I soon learned from my 20 something daughter-not to do so. I have since gone thru Facebook and all social media and completed a large clean-up. I also think that the privacy settings on most social media is much better and most business minded people are careful.

Joan Whitebook You're really cautious!

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL I probably would have just said no and left it at that.

Tammy Lankford That makes 3 of us that I've heard about.

Pamela Seley, REALTOR® Some say Twitter is a good place to be for business, but I pretty much stay away and haven't accepted any requests for a couple of years. I once had someone posting things I didn't want on my feed and couldn't figure out how to get rid of him.

Marte Cliff there are two things you can do: block a twitter follower, which I do to followers I find offensive, or mute them, which means whatever they tweet you won't see in your twitter feed. If you haven't been on twitter then I wouldn't worry about it.

Marte - I am afraid I ex[lained it wrong. I believe it was Facebook, and for some reason I had a problem logging in, and I started working with them, and this was part of their process, where they verified that this was me, so they picked 3 of my "friends" from my account and asked to name them, and I couldn't.

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL Oh... I get it now! You had friends you didn't even know. I think that could happen to me on LinkedIn. I check to see that the people really are what they say they are, but would I recognize them later? I doubt it.

It is good to be careful. I do not accept invites on Face Book unless someone I know can tell who they are and how we are connected. Some of these people just started using FB and are randomly befriending everyone. I can't see that being a good thing. I think they are fishing for your info to do monetary damage.

My default tends to be "no", and I still can't understand why 98% of the local realtors all want to be my friend. It turns out the 2% who don't ask are the 2% I actually would say 'yes' to.
