Happy Birthday America!

Humans appear to have the need to be fiercely independent.  Looking back, we should probably be cheering as soon as we leave our mother's womb instead of crying.  Most children spend the next 17-20 years trying to prove they are unique and capable of being independent until they finally move out on their own.

As they enter the work force, many immediately resent management and feel they are capable of doing the job better, even if they don't yet understand the big picture.  Some truly do end up with better ways to do business and they themselves become future managers and leaders.  They grow into what they used to resent.  Unfortunately, many forget that as they have new employees enter their ranks.

I am grateful for having had the opportunity to travel and live in many different countries and see many different cultures so I truly embrace the United States  Admittingly, it is not perfect; however, I have yet to travel to another country I would rather call home.

My perspective on life is blessed as a result of having been a third culture kid. Although I was born in the United States, I started kindergarten in Vietnam during the war.  After my 3 and a half year "tour" we moved to Korea for another 2 years.  I returned to these United States in the fifth grade and stayed until I moved to Iran in high school where I graduated during their revolution in December 1978.  Some of my mother's co-workers and my school superintendent were amoung the American's held hostage for 444 days.

When I returned to the United States alone at 17 years of age, I already new how special our country was.  I literally cried when they checked my passport and said "Welcome Home".

While attending Boise State University, I used my past experiences as I tried to blend the lessons learned from my psychology, sociology, economics and my business classes in my pursuit of a BBA in marketing. It seems ironic that (no pun intented) that my profession of choice is to be a Realtor, the purveyor of the American Dream - that of home ownership.

The United States of America is the home of the brave and the land of the free.  That is why, when I learned of the app that allowed me to overlay the American flag over my photo I took immediate action.  I created and saved a few images and immediately changed my Facebook profile photo to one of them.

If you would like to create some images yourself using this free app, just go to:

http://happy4thofjuly.liverez.com/  I thank Tracy Lotz, the CEO of www.LiveREZ.com who came up with this idea, for making this app free since the United States is truely the land of the free.

As we sit around lazily this 4th of July weekend, stop and think about the beginning of our great country:

  • how we sought our independence from England;
  • about how we have built this country into what it is and what it stands for;
  • think about how our biggest enemy at the time (England) is now probably one of our best ally
  • Think about the ultimate sacrifice others have given so that you can still enjoy your right to freedom of speech.

Jim - America may not be perfect, but there are so many things I absolutely love about this country. I would never want to live anywhere else, and appreciate the freedom and opportunities I have just from living here.
