Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) & Fireworks Don’t Mix

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) & Fireworks Don’t Mix

With the Fourth of July celebrations taking place we need to remember that Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and fireworks don’t mix. Now is a great time to check with your neighbors to see if they suffer from PTSD and show your appreciation for their service to America by not using fireworks.

Fact is the sight and sounds of fireworks going off can often times induce flashbacks and or anxiety attacks for many Veterans suffering from PTSD. For family members and friends of Vets dealing with PTSD it is smart to have a plan in the event fireworks set off unusual behavior.

Respect our Vets and remember Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) & Fireworks Don’t Mix!

We at Albuquerque Homes Realty wish each of you a very happy and safe Fourth of July weekend. May God continue to Bless America.

Holy Cow, you are right! I can't imagine what that must be like... I am a veteran from back in the Vietnam era so I am sympathetic.

John McCormack I always connected fireworks with celebration - did not know it can be a concern for people with PTSD...

John- what an excellent reminder for all of us.  We are careful about our pets during fireworks but this makes so much sense.  We must be aware of our wounded veterans who may suffer PTSD.

As we watched both Rio Rancho and Albuquerque NM City fireworks from the backyard we could still hear the loud booms.  The neighbor kids were shooting off some big "illegal" sounding fireworks.

Debbie looked at me and stated, "see tell me that doesn't do a number on Vets with PTSD".  She's right it could and probably would throw many into a negative flashback, anxiety attack or worse a violent rage.  Personally we respect the Veterans of this great land too much to do anything that might set them back in their battle with PTSD.

Thank you for remembering the American soldier's who now live with negative side effects from their time of duty.

Good post. I was thinking the same thing on the 4th of July. I felt my community took it to the extreme and just listening to the sounds made me shudder because it took me back to experiencing my own spouses flashbacks after he got out of the war. Only back then, PTSD wasn't even a word - just a realy and very scary experience.

My son has severe PTSD. He went straight from boot camp to the base of the mountain in Afghanistan... totally unprepared for what he would see and be required to do.  Thank you for this post!

I had not thought of that, but you both make an excellent point on the subect.  I don't think people are aware of all the circumstances of their decisions.  A

John, this is so important - and something most people don't think about.  Same with dogs.  Willie didn't care for them one bit, and he doesn't even have PTSD!
