Many Californians Buy Second Homes in Coos Bay, Oregon

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

My husband and I sometimes talk about where would be the best place to live at retirement. Neither of us are from Sacramento, and I prefer the ocean over just about any place inland. Homes along the coast in California are extremely expensive, even a small home, and although prices are better in Hawaii, I don't think I will be able to persuade my husband to live year-round in Hawaii. We might need a summer place in the states somewhere. We've been talking about buying a second home now, way before retirement, if we can just come to a compromise on where.

He brought up Coos Bay, Oregon, as he's much more of a rugged outdoor enthusiast than me. I will go hiking, for example, but I don't want to go more than 3 miles or so, and definitely not straight uphill. Otherwise, he will have to listen to me describe my immediate experience in ways he'd probably prefer not to hear. You can read more in my personal blog today and see all of the photographs at this link: Delightful Coos Bay, Oregon, and Blankets of Fog.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I would love to have a second home on the coast. It's amazing how expensive properties are on the California coastline.

I have to admit, as soon as you mentioned Coos Bay, OR as a potential retirement locale, I went straight to searching for homes there online.  Lots of variety and not too pricey.  If you can deal with the weather, would be great.  I'm not a fan of the gray days of the pacific northwest, but my husband would LOVE it.

Jennifer Provencio Well,  we don't need a mansion, just a little house with a couple of bedrooms and a couple of baths. Still upwards of a million. If we want the oceanfront, and we do. Otherwise, why bother?

Chris Ann Cleland Let's get our husbands together and they can go live somewhere cold, wet and foggy and they can visit you and me in Hawaii. Sound like a plan?

Good morning Elizabeth.  With all the family living within no more than a 20 minute drive from our home I don't think I can get my wife to move anywhere.  You bet I would move in a minute but I know it is not to be so....

Coos Bay sounds wonderful, Elizabeth.  I'm thinking you may enjoy a second home there.

Hi Elizabeth.  The client that bought in 2008 will not lose money if she bought in good areas.  Prices will return to pre 2008 levels,

That sounds like a perfect plan.  Sunny beaches are way more our thing.
