Happy 4th of July!
Do you know that there are many other heroes besides Paul Revere and George Washington?
Here are a few of the unsung American Revolution heroes who made a difference in the success of the American Revolution.
John Honeyman was an Irishman who had fought with the British in the French and Indian war, so the British trusted him. However, he was a Patriot spy and gave George Washington the intelligence he needed to route the Hessians early in the Revolution at Trenton. It was a major defeat for the British and the beginning of the turning of the war.
Elizabeth Hart was a statuesque Patriot woman who often dressed as a man and went into British camps carrying supplies unnoticed by the British, gathering intelligence. She successfully defended her home when Torey troops came in looking for a rebel who was hiding in a house.
Peter Francisco, 'The Virginia Giant' at 6'6", 280 pounds, with incredible physical strength, was an invaluable source. He took an 1100 pound cannon, hoisted it on his shoulders and carried it to a place where the Brith wouldn't have thought one would be. George Washington called him a 'one man army.' He was a Portugese man, born in the Azores, and they weren't sure how he got to America.
James Armistead, a Virginia slave, was believed to be a loyal British servant, but actually a Patriot spy. He posed as an escaped slave and won the trust of the British officers. He was one of several slaves who worked for the Patriots.
Freedom isn't free - every generation must defend their freedom. These and many more sacriced and many gave it all to advance the cause of freedom for the United States of America. Let us never forget their sacriice and value our freedom
