I Had So Much Fun On The 4th Of July, I'm Doing It Again In August

I'm a history buff...so the 4th of July does annoy me a little. Forget the fact that the annual "man on the street" interviews that there are people in this country who have NO idea what we're celebrating...it's the actual history of the date that bugs me.

Did you know that the Declaration of Independence actually happened on July 2, 1776? The 4th was the day that Congress approved the final draft. Ok....so that works.

But the declaration was not signed until August 2. So I'm thinking that's another good day to celebrate. I'm in...joining me? lol

Sure! Why not have another holiday in August. Can't have to many reasons to celebrate with good food and family.

I think my favorite thing I saw online was someone asking when July 4th was, and people started to comment things like "I think it's in October sometime" etc. to funny.

I was thinking about this yesterday, along with other odd thoughts:

1. Jefferson and Adams died exactly 50 years after July 4th 1776 (and only five hours apart). An interesting coincidence made less cool by your knowledge of the real date, Karen. Thanks a lot.

2. Calvin Coolidge was born on the 4th of July. This is probably a nice slogan opportunity for any potential president. Let's see if Malia Obama or Geraldo Rivera try that little marketing factoid.

3. What if we hadn't fought the revolutionary war. It's not like we became permanently tax free. And if we hadn't found Independence would we have maintained a nifty British accent? Some researchers say its the British who changed their accent... us? Not so much. (Sorry UK, it's not me; it's you.) (also- I'm too lazy to find that link right now.)

4. Would someone want to give me a Button Gwinnett autograph? For those who try to collect the signature of every signer of the Declaration of Independence, this is the hard one. He left very few examples, so his ink is one of the most expensive treasures in the autograph world. Billy Shakespeare will set you back more- but his is super-duper rare and worth more than a million bucks. (Several of his authentic signatures were on IOU's. Now that's a great way to pay back debt with interest.)

5. I should have blogged all this. Instead I pasted them and edited them into your comment section. I don't know how I feel about that. I guess it's just that the 4th is such a date-stamped opportunity which spoils after midnight. Maybe I'll copy and paste this comment on my blog this coming August 2nd. Thanks for that idea Karen! Maybe that's how I'll celebrate.

I was certainly in awe when standing in the very room the document was drafted and signed.  I despised history in school because I had a terrible teachers. They wanted me to memorize dates and weren't teaching the why of history.  Today I love history.
