Peeling The Orange Badge
Great information. This kind of gives you an idea of what some Ambassadors can do to help.
Peeling The Orange Badge
It would seem that there are some misunderstandings about the purpose and activity of the Ambassadors. (click for Kerrie's post from 2012 on the topic of Ambassadors).
Is there some clear cut criteria that makes someone automatically be designated as an Ambassador? No, there's not. There's no point level that automatically triggers the Orange Badge to magically appear on your profile.
There is subjectivity to it, and not everyone offered the responsibility accepts it. For the most part it's a mix of participation, knowledge, passion for the community and (for the most part) a positive attitude. Stop and think about it, if someone is supposed to be helping around the community, seeing posts and comments by that person filled with complaint after complaint isn't exactly going to instill confidence in the community, ESPECIALLY to new members of the Rain. It doesn't mean a Pollyanna outlook is required, but one can CONSTRUCTIVELY express concerns without creating turmoil.
What does an Ambassador do? Well that varies from Ambassador to Ambassador, a quick look down the Ambassador list and it's easy to see that some Ambassadors aren't as active as they used to be (and perhaps Bob and Ben will do something about that).
In general, Ambassadors are community members that are willing to help (and no, that doesn't mean they have exclusive rights on helping, one of the great things about ActiveRain is the willingness of everyone to help out!).
The way we help may show up in a multitude of ways:
- Welcoming new members, including mentorship activities.
- Helping AR Staff when they want opinions on potential changes (and no, we don't always get asked to look at the upcoming changes).
- Writing posts to help the community (tutorials, advice, etc.)
- Answering questions (either on other's posts, in the Q&A section, via email and phone calls)
- An extra set of eyes and ears for the Staff to let them know when the site is acting wonky or someone is having a real problem.
What Ambassadors aren't:
- Superhuman. We have emotions just like everyone else, and sometimes the best thing we can do is push the keyboard away and not engage. But sometimes we don't push away the keyboard (and don't think Kerrie or Bob aren't willing to give us a corrective slap to the back of the head if we misbehave).
- Gifted with special knowledge about how to make blogging work. That said, I've blogged every day for almost five years, so I have learned a few things about how things work and try to share that knowlege.
- Some super secret cabal gifted with special powers. We're CLEARLY identified. We don't have access to the SMITE button, and Ambassadors aren't issued Feature power with their Orange Badge.
- We're also not given points, cash or other perks for our service. We take on the extra responsibility because we care about the community.
