Marte is right about needing "Courage" in a successful Real Estate career.  I may add you will need to know that you are in charge of your own business.  You are your own key to success!

Courage is the first ingredient in a successful real estate career. Without it, you can't even get out of the starting gate.

But of course that's not all you need…

After courage, you need Passion

If your definition of success includes earning a nice living while feeling good about your life, you must have passion. In order to get up glad to face the work day, you need to be eager to do your job and to see the happy results you produce.

Passion also adds to success because it causes you to go the extra distance for your clients, and that builds your reputation, your referrals, and your repeat business.

And, passion will keep you on track with the other ingredients of a successful career:

A thirst for knowledge. What you learned in real estate class was just the tip of the iceberg that makes up the body of knowledge you need for success in real estate.

On top of that you need the interest and dedication that leads you learn:

  • All about your forms and contracts, and how to clearly explain each paragraph to clients iceberg
  • All about your local regulations and restrictions, including zoning, permit processes, and statues that govern housing
  • All about the HOA regulations and CC&Rs that affect the neighborhoods where you work
  • All about assessments that affect the homes you sell, including HOA fees, LID's, property taxes, and tax breaks that might be available to your buyers
  • Where the school district boundaries are
  • Where to send buyers for information on the schools
  • How to read title reports and spot red flags that call for more research
  • Where to turn for answers you don't have
  • How to best understand and serve the people in your chosen niche
  • ...and more

Perseverance. Real estate is notorious for building you up and then dropping you. You have to be able to pick yourself up after a fall and keep right on going.

Patience and Persistence.

  • The patience to deal with clients who need every detail explained repeatedly.
  • The patience to wait it out when clients can't quite decide what they want to do.
  • The patience and persistence to keep blogging, prospecting, networking, and otherwise marketing yourself when there's no instant gratification – and to stay in touch with prospective clients, past clients, and everyone in your sphere of influence, even when you haven't heard from them in months.

Successful agents know that it's important to market themselves every single day. You can't wait until "you have time" or even worse, until you have no closings on the horizon, no listings, and no buyers.

Why it is vital to success.

Almost no business will succeed without passion, you can clearly see it in real estate when many people leave 1 or 2 years after getting licensed. They got in it for the money, found out it's not that easy and got out.

One of my greatest mentors once told me: Keeping up, checking up, and staying up are three important factors in Real Estate. Keeping up with the current marketing tools. Checking up with past and current clients. Staying up until your work is complete. Thanks for your words of  wisdom.
