It's been 20 years since we lost the unforgetable Bob Ross, host of The Joy of Painting television series in which he would demonstrate how to easily paint a stunning landscape. It was hard not to love him - his show was meditative to watch, his voice was soothing, and his paintings were lovely. He died 20 years ago this week due to lymphoma but his television show continues in syndication.
Bob Ross had a philosophy of life that was infectious. He famously said that when a person is painting, "You have unlimited power. You have the ability to move mountains. You can bend rivers. But when I get home, the only thing I have power over is the garbage." We all have power over some part of our business, but not over everything. The key to success in business is to know what you have actual control over.
Ross also said "They say everything looks better with odd numbers of things. But sometimes I put even numbers - just to upset the critics." There are certain "rules" that we all have to follow in real estate - but there are some rules that we can break. Maybe your office doesn't farm - you can still do it. In fact, it's in breaking the rules that we learn the most.
Even when they tell you that you can't do it, "The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Antyining. As long as you believe."
And what if it doesn't work out the way you wanted? It's ok. "We don't make mistakes. We just have happy accidents."
"From all of us here I'd like to wish you happy painting...and God bless my friend."
