The New Normal Of Communication

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Pervasive Social MediaI have seen recently many folks bailing on social media of all types to reclaim their "sanity" from the speed of our society. While I understand at the surface level not doing anything to excess, unplugging totally cuts you off from people.

The Millennials generation in particular for personal or business purposes is NOT unplugging. You can disconnect for a day and major things happen in their lives that you probably are unaware of now.

I think with ALL the forms of social media we can develop being "lightly tethered."

That means breeze through them READING when you get a chance. You don't have to post or LIKE or comment just READ. Think of yourself as a BROWSER into the world of the up and coming generation.

Is Grandma Martha at the nursing home Facebooking four times a day? Probably not, but with all generations think of HOW they communicate and how you can tune in with only so many hours in the day. YOU DO want to connect with people however the form it takes. It IS a NEW NORMAL for many.

The interesting thing is it's my kids who most often tell me that I need to put down my phone. I tend to monitor emails while watching TV in the evenings and they say "pay attention to the show mom" lol. I'm not worried....the pendulum will swing and overall, we'll be ok.

Lightly tethered. That is kinda funny coming from Mr Connected who sleeps with his phone.

I remember the day when we actually spoke directly to someone...before answering machines, texting, emails.  Now, it seems we 'get back to each other'.

Thanks for sharing you brain!

Gary- I'd like to consider myself lightly tethered.  I do like having my iPhone in my hand or close but I skim and skip through some of the things I see on Social Media.

New normal, but the art of conversation is being lost in this new normal.

Social media is part of my day . . . . but not the day.  I do go on line with my cell-phone for news updates . . . . and to read articles. But there are time during the that the cellphone is turned off.

Good luck and success.

Very funny. I get those game requests almost everyday. I guess a lot of people play them and think I would be a good loser.

We must adapt. Things are constantly changing and I would never want to be left behind. I think it's great that we can stay connected no matter where we are. We just need to make sure it doesn't take over our life.

I have loosened the reins and don't connect like I used to. I actually like it and it makes for a more relaxed day.

I don't surf the internet as much as did and I do plan time away but I still find it a great source of connecting - Twitter still remains the source of current events as they are happening. Good blog, Gary.

People confuse effective communications and social media . . . . Today I attended a meeting that needed a sponsor for an event . . . . the chairperson of the committee said they would take care of it . . . . and text the person?

Good luck and success.

Hello Gary ... I like your post and there are several reasons VB tries to stay plugged in:

Rising to the top of Google searches with specific names ...

Staying in touch with everyone and my vacations ...

Business connects ... just to name a few

Gary, like Sharon Lee I do like the term lightly tethered. I am probably at the low end of the spectrum on that. Not surrounded by millenials or cell service will do that to a person.
