The Composite Profile of a Successful Real Estate Agent...

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

What personality traits and skills are necessary for success in real estate? Following are my ideas/opinions, as presented in this week's newsletter.

Please feel free to add more!

Successful agents… Of course have courage. We went over that in part 1 of this series. Then in another Active Rain post I shared a hint for gaining more courage on those days when you need a boost.

Successful agents also have knowledge, persistence, patience, and perseverance. We covered that in part 2.

What else?

Successful agents generally have these traits in common:

Possession of a Self Starter Button. Successful agents don't sleep late in the start buttonmorning because they have no appointments scheduled. They don't go to the office and play computer games while hoping a call comes in on floor time. They don't take a 2 hour lunch break because "there isn't anything going on."

They find something useful to do – quite often involving marketing their services to create more business. They're the ones who are apt to print my 14 Things to Do to Make Highest and Best Use of a "Blank Week" in Real Estate  and refer to the list when they run out of their own ideas. (If you need it, go get it, it's free.)

Independence. While they do cooperate with others, they'd rather not have a boss telling them what to do and when to do it. They prefer being independent contractors because their mindset is that of an entrepreneur, not an employee.

diceA Gambler's Spirit. These are folks who aren't content to hold a job with steady hours and steady pay. They'd rather roll the dice on their own abilities and take a chance on earning nothing - or a whole lot more than they could earn bringing home an hourly wage or a monthly salary.

Ambition. Because after all, the sky's the limit.

Self Confidence. Successful agents aren't afraid to share what they know – and aren't afraid to say "I don't know, but I'll find out."

Intelligence. Agents have to know and retain so much information – an agile mind is a definite requirement.

Mathematical aptitude. Clients count on their agents to explain costs, net proceeds, and much more. Successful agents can do so easily.

Good organizational skills. When an agent has 5 or 6 transactions going at the same time, it's imperative to stay well-organized in order to keep everything on track.

A sympathetic attitude and genuine liking for our fellow humans. You just have to have this, because if you didn't there would be too many times when you'd lose patience and just say "Go fly a kite!" (Or something a bit stronger)

Loved ones who understand and support your career. There's no doubt about it – sometimes real estate does intrude on personal time. Those with families and friends who understand and support the decision to take a call at 9 p.m. or run out to show a house on Sunday afternoon do make it easier to succeed.

OK - that's my list.

Marte Cliff  I don't know about others, but I do have 'Gambler's Spirit'! People were wondering what am I up to when I left my almost settled IT career and being considered in top 5% in my field of expertise!

Praful Thakkar I guess you showed them, didn't you! I expect you also possess those other attributes or you wouldn't have made it in real estate.

I'm glad you included the supportive loved ones....boy that's key. My husband and I used to joke that we were so lucky to have each other because we are both sales people....we both get the highs and lows, and enjoy it.

James Dray They're so important - I've known many (failing) agents who couldn't keep track of what needed to be done each day. They stayed stressed and their clients were unhappy.

Wayne Martin I'll bet I described you!

Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner It's terribly hard for an agent to succeed if someone at home is whining and complaining about the phone calls, being late for dinner, etc.

Marte: Staying calm under pressure definitely helps in this industry, especially when buyer/seller (and sometimes other agents) are losing their cool.

Anita Clark And some of those folks do make a habit of "losing it."

I have a client in California who was described by one of his clients as "The calm in the storm." I thought that was a really fine testimonial.

Chris Ann Cleland I think it's important, but I've known agents who couldn't add 2 and 2. They always had to get help in order to explain things to their clients. I'd be embarrased!

I also knew an agent who couldn't read maps, and that was back when maps were necessary - no GPS.
