Marine Barracks Friday Parades - June 12, 2015

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH / @properties DC / MD / VA

In Capitol Hill, there is a great institution, the Marine BarracksI wrote about their weekly parades prior.

Every Friday night, crowds start to gather at 7pm for a seat at the 8:45pm Parade. If you are expecting to be in Washington DC on a Friday evening in 2015, see their 2015 schedule here; this year, May 1, 2015 to August 28, 2015.

Tickets have been sold out for the summer, but I knew I could get in line at 7pm or so and see if I could get into General Admission (that would be the stands I photographed in the prior post), which are at the far end of festivities. This was June 12, 2015 and there'd been a slight rain during the dinner hour.  Being grateful for the 15-20 degree drop in the temperature was tempered with the concern that surely there would yet be more downpours as the evening progressed.  The calculation was that everyone would be spooked and not show up which meant we'd get seats and it would be much less muggy than any subsequent weeks in the summer.

We went, and it was perfect.  My (naturalized) American heart swelled with pride. The actual event is from 8:45-10:15pm, but the Marine kept up entertained and engaged. Each week, the guest of honor is different.  This particular week, it was Congressman Mac Thornberry, from the 13th District in Texas. He is the Chairperson of the Armed Services Committee in the US House, which would give everyone involved just a little extra reason to be on target.

Commandants House

Walking towards the Marine Barracks, this is the Commandant's House
on G St SE.

Local lore has this home being haunted by the 1st Commandant.

This was the original structure, built during the Jefferson adminiastration in 1803.

Commandant Landmark Status Focus

The entire Marine Corps Barracks is itself a Historic Distict in DC, and this home itself is a National Historic Landmark.

Surely this will protect this part of the neighborhood from being developed.

stands and club

The buildings in the foreground are
along the length of 8th St SE.

The leftmost building, Officer's Club is reserved to invited guests.

Prior to the show

As the crowds came in, these two gentlemen kept us engaged with games and crowd engagement.

To the right are some of the barracks, though there are several other buildings off this Quad, within a few city blocks.

Filling Up

More entertainment, though I did stop filming when they truly started.

The Silent Drill, where the entire platoon works through their repertoire without any verbal commands is simply mesmerizing.

Marine Barracks Flying Flag

The Marine Corp Barracks flag, waving in the breeze.

God Bless America.

There are still another several weeks of Parades (every Friday until Aug. 28, 2015).

Alternatively, there are performances

  • 8pm Wednesdays at the US Capitol, West Terrace
  • 8pm Thursdays at the Washington Monument
  • July 18 & August 15 at the Chamber Orchestra at NOVA (3001 Beauregard St, Alexandria, VA)
  • October 2, 11, 18, 25 at the Sousa Band Hall (7th & K St SE, Washington, DC)

Truly a talented group of people, they can be reached at (202) 433-4011 or (202) 433-5809 or email.

During the show, several friends and family members came to mind.  Those that visit us often enough, after several visits, we need to start considering less "touristy" sites as destinations.  This one was added to several future visits.

If you want to be able to live in this neighborhood and have this be a weekly event in your local social calendar, reach out to me and let's see how you can fit in this wonderful Capitol Hill, a very welcoming village if you truly think about it and get to know us all.

Lise Howe Agreed, it was a moving experience.  Having lived on Cap Hill for almost 20 years, I do think I'll be back much sooner again.

Joanna Cohlan Agreed, the younger set doesn't usually care much for stuffy museums along the Mall.

Sheila Anderson Yes, and this is also Marine Corps base # 1, because, well, it's the first.

Roy Kelley You are close, sort of. I wonder if you've even been.  Though I do think they get to Montgomery County for events every so often as well.

Bob Crane My response to you yesterday when I said I had to finish my draft is what compelled me to finish & post.

@longislandrealtors Grabbing photos at that time of night (8:30 or so) isn't as conducive to good photographs as I'd like to think.  Thank you.

Aloha Claude,

Mahalo for sharing this. The US military is an amazing institution and at the nadir of Human military technology, organizational and martial prowess. It is truly remarkable what subordination, determination, and tradition can accomplish. The same cannot be said of the political shenanigans that so easily lead our brave men and women off to die so that others may profit prodigiously.

My father and older brother were both Marines, and my Great grand father was a career officer in the Army Air Corps. I would not have made it through the Marine boot camp, unfortunately.  I would have expired like a falling ginger blossom on hot lava rock. You might have heard a sizzle while I passed away but that's about it. I'm more Horatio Nelson in stature than George Patton, although well inclined strategically speaking, athleticism was never my strong suit.

Lisa Von Domek It's also given me a reason to suggest to other locals who've not taken the opportunity.

Kimo Stowell You're making me smile...ginger blossom.  This past week, I was with a home inspector and a buyer client, both of whom were ex-military.  The inspector was Marine Corps (one is never ex-Marine) and he did suggest there was no other true militart branch.

Tammy Lankford The sadness is only exceeded by the stupidity of this past week.

I love, love, love this post Claude Labbe and would definitely add this event to my bucket list. It must really tug at your heart in a very big way! You described it with perfection, respecfully, and with honor. You made me proud just by reading it. Also, I just loved the comment by our AR Ginger Blossom Kimo Stowell! I also come from a military bg family and must confess, I would kneel down every day before my kids when they were sound asleep and prayed they would never join the militay - call me Ginger, Ginger Blossom. I'm with Kimo all the way!

Patricia Feager, MBA, GRI, Cert Negotiations Expert, Military Relo Prof I'll leave the Ginger Blossom comments aside, for both yourself & Kimo Stowell .

I do understand your prayers.  One of my nephews is in the military, and while there is a lot of pride with that, I wouldn't be honest if I didn't also acknowledge some hesitation & concern for his safety.
