One of the most commonly mentioned shortcomings of blogging on ActiveRain has been the lack of customizability of the platform of members blogs.  We work to create a very easy to use platform for the real estate industry and never intend or do intend to compete with the feature sets of other blogging platforms such as Wordpress or Moveable Type.  But based on feedback we feel it's important to give members more branding optons to create a sense of ownership over their blogs without affecting the community.

Currently under development is a more customizable blogging platform for ActiveRain members to get both the benefits of being part of a community such as ActiveRain and have their content appear on their "own" blog.

This new platform will:

  • Allow members to host their blogs on their own domain name or as a sub-domain of one of our sites.
  • Allow members to customize the look of their blogs including using different templates, changing logos and color schemes.
  • Members will be able to manage multiple blogs through the ActiveRain Real Estate Network, choosing which posts are published to which blog.  In a similar way as selecting how to publish posts to groups or Localism.com
  • Comments can be shared between blogs so you only have to manage them from one place.
  • Allow members to maintain all of the current benefits they get from posting to ActiveRain such as SEO, and maximum exposure for their content.
  • Make it easier to post multi-media content such as videos and pod casts.
  • Provide a cost effective hosted blogging solution that requires almost no time to setup.

We are still in development with this solution so any feedback/feature requests are greatly appreciated, and we'll try to incorporate it into the final solution.

Thank you for your hard work. We're all excited to see what happens next.  When is the guinea pig test starting that Jonathan Washburn mentioned?

Chris: Yes, this does have something to do with the "guinea pigs" that Jon was looking for.  We're hoping to have some members start playing around with this stuff early next week.

No suggestions at the moment but will give it some thought. Glad to hear about more improvements and options.

I am very excited about the "multiple blogs" option.  I'm still concerned about the 10 posts per week blocking limitation - which has pushed me to use other platforms - very frustrating.  Will the 'block' be taken off so that we can post based on our business needs and not dictated by # of posts restrictions?

Christina: You can post more than 10 times a week, we just don't automatically give people 200 points for posts over the first 10.  We do have a restriction of 5 posts a day, which is mainly for spam prevention, which we will probably lift.

So ActiveRain is moving towards a full service blogging solution interms of customization but how will it affect the real estate focus of ActiveRain and Localism?

Toby: We aren't trying to replicate the features of a full service blogging platform.  But we are trying to provide some additional options for members blogs on ActiveRain.  There will still be many people that want the feature sets of a platform such as a WordPress, and that's not our target audience.

Sounds like a subtle way of saying there will be a cost involved.  I'm not opposed, but is that where it's heading? A "free" platform and an "enhanced" or "pro" version?

Another good feature to consider would be an import efature, whereby instead of cutting and pasting blogs article from our own sites onto AR, we can import them, so to speak, via our rss feed.

Sounds cool Matt.   Will I be able to combine my two profiles and list it under 2 categorizes...like real estate trainer and agent? So I can have one blog here in the Rain?

Steve: Yes, it will be a enhanced feature to ActiveRain that we will charge for.  The ActiveRain Real Estate Network itself will always remain a free and open platform but we will be launching additional subscription based services on top of it (gotta pay the bills somehow :)

Yes, we're looking at ways of allowing people who have other blogs to easily submit include their content in ActiveRain and/or Localism.  Not sure of the exact mechanism we'll use let but letting them "suck" in their rss feeds may be one solution.

Matt does this mean we may be able to get track backing? Just curious. And I have become addicted to youtube and it works just fine on AR now LOL.  But I know that is not what you mean by videocasting LOL.

One question: Without buying a customized blog from you, will I still be able to host my existing AR blog with one of my purchased domain names? Just curious it that is one of the things in the works

Matt, ditto to Bryant's comment. Sometimes it's hard to fathom that you have only had ActiveRain up 8 months! It's an impressive accomplishment.

Sounds Fabulous Mat,

Will there also be an ability to post outside advertising so that we may reap those rewards as well. Say like Google ads etc. Looking forward to see some of the new templates. I hope that one of them at least will pose a blank banner which will allow us to import ( upload ) images etc. It would be even nicer if it allowed a slide show in the banner. I am sure I could come up with another hundred or so ideas if I put my thinking cap on.

Cool huh?

Matt, I couldn't agree with Steve more. Import via RSS. As a matter of fact I posted this sentiment on the message board about a month ago.  I have a company blog that I maintain and would love to import my "real estate" taged/specific posts to active rain.  I don't think all my posts would be relevant.  That said, great site/service and if you ever want to talk nerd and brain storm tech solutions feel free to reach out to me. This is what I do all day everyday. Anthony

It sounds good!

When I first joined Active Rain I spent the longest time trying to get color in to my post and finally decided as they say in Italy "Is not possible" so I am very glad to hear that.  I am especially interested in hosting my blog under my own domain name.

Looking forward to the rollout of the new enhancements - wish I was more of a blog tech and could give you specific suggestions.  I'm sure you've done benchmarking against alternative platforms and looked for "best of breed" features to incorporate.

A good example of a simple cross-posting setup is one I use at AustinBloggers.org.

Users log in, click "post an entry", then can either start typing or click "fetch recent postings from your blog". When you click fetch, you see a list of your recent blog articles and simply click one, which instantly auto-fills the Title, url of the original post, and the content. You can then change the title or edit the content of needed, then click post and it's done.

Matt,

Thanks for all you do.  It's taken me about a month of working at it everyday for several hours to learn how to post to my blog, put items on localism, add neighborhoods, etc.  When you implement anything new, can you make sure there are instructions so folks like me can start using the cool new toys without the huge and long learning curve?  Thanks so much.

Matt, I feel so lucky to have found out about Active Rain (thanks Ardell and RCG!) and on to actually be a part of such an exciting endeavor...even more so with Localism.  As I commented my first week:  Blogging makes the world my neighbor, and Localism takes my neighborhood to the world!

Here's hoping I made the guinea pig/focus group cut, I was #15!

Thanks for all that you, Jonathan, Caleb et al do!
