According to Mojave Max, Spring has officially arrived!  Who is Mojave Max, you ask?  He is the desert tortoise mascot of Clark County's Desert Conservation Program.  He is the desert Southwest's equivalent of groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.

Mojave Max lives in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.    In the fall, he enters his burrow to brumate (technical term for reptiles in hibernation) and he emerges in the spring.   This year, he officially left his burrow on Tuesday April 15, 2008 at 11:27 AM.

This is the ninth year that Mojave Max has been studied.  This year, his emergence was the latest on record.  He was right, it has been a cool spring.  Now, it is time for the warmer temperatures to arrive.
Students have also been learning about the desert climate and conditions with help from Mojave Max.   The students could enter a contest to guess the exact date and time that he would come out of his burrow.  There are prizes for students as well as teachers.  The winner will be announced soon.  Here is last years winner.

Come, join us in Las Vegas for some great springtime temperatures.  If you are interested in relocating to Las Vegas or would like information on Las Vegas real estate, please email me roberta@search4lasvegashomes.com  or call me at 702-354-8988.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Roberta, that is so cool!  I'm not talking about the weather either, lol.

Spring was over and we were into summer ...until yesterday.
Today was 74 for a high!
Have a great spring!

Ray: Yes, it is cool!  Thanks for commenting.

Jim: Yesterday was actually the warmest day of the year so far, it was around 90 degrees.  It is a bit cooler today with wind and only in the low 80's.  Summer will be MUCH warmer!

We hit 58 today so 'ol Max must be right on. :)  Mother Nature has been a bear this spring, so now I know who to thank for the warm weather.

Very cool how we all see Spring a little differently in different areas of the country!

Spring in Hemet is great...especially when the orange blossom's bloom. You can smell it all the way across town.

I kinda dread summer...we run our A/C at full blast for month's out here. I imagine it's the same in Vegas.

Great stuff.

Joey: Spring is beautiful in the desert!  I love summer, it is my favorite season, even in Vegas!  I do run my upstairs air conditioner most of the summer but not the downstairs.  It stays pretty cool down there most of the time.  My favorite part of summer is swimming in my pool with my dog Sparky!  We both love the pool!  Thanks for stopping by and stay cool!
