Joseph Force Carter was a New York Supreme Court Judge. He came up missing on August 6, 1930. A massive manhunt began and it coined a phrase “pulling a Carter”. It is reported he had “shady” dealings with a corrupt political machine known as Tammany Hall. Just prior to his coming up missing he was reported to receive a strange phone call. Afterwards he cashed two rather large checks. In 1939 he was declared legally dead. His body has never been found and his disappearance is still a mystery.
