"Finding Vivian Maier" - A Great Documentary for Shutter Bugs

Last evening I watched a fascinating documentary.  I suspect any photography buff would enjoy it as well.  The title is, “Finding Vivian Maier.”

When she died in 2009, Vivian Maier, a longtime nanny, left behind a treasure trove consisting of thousands of photo negatives she’d produced over a period of many years.

While my own digital photo archive consists of about 5,000+ images, Vivian’s collection was well over 100,000.

Vivian didn’t capitalize on her rare talent for taking pictures. She was a hoarder, and during her lifetime, kept the photographs to herself.

The documentary, chronicles the relentless adventure and investigation by amateur historian, John Maloof, to reveal intricacies and idiosyncrasies, of Vivian’s very private life.

Her inspiring photographic works have been displayed at various exhibitions around the globe.

A website devoted to Vivian Maier, provides a trailer of the documentary.  It can be accessed via: http://www.findingvivianmaier.com

If you enjoy photography, and want to learn interesting perspectives about taking pictures, I recommend you watch!

Hi Myrl,

I am so fascinated by the Vivian Maier story! I just spent about the past 30 minutes visiting the website and reading everything about her. The Trailer was excellent! What a treasure that man discovered and how lucky we are that her name is now in lights and she is being remembered for someone more than just a Nany. I was surprised to see that she lived in Vernon Hills, IL. This city was very close to the town I lived in after moving from Chicago into Lake County, IL in Lake Villa. That's where the mall was located and everyone shopped there! But I'm pretty sure the mall didn't even exist in the 1960's when she shot many of those photos in Chicago. I didn't leave Chicago for the suburbs until 1979. It was interesting for me to see those photographs and the fashions and the people!

Her photographs were amazing! She looked at the ordinary and saw the extraordinary in every capture! To think she started out with a Kodak Brownie Box! Living in an attic, storing her negatives in trunks; then being auctioned for peanuts. Lucky man - That was a treasure hunt that struck gold and I'm glad he had her work made into a documentary and now the world knows!!! She captured history as seen through the eyes of the camera and it looked more to me like the hobos were the ones who suffered during the 50's and 60's - those lost souls who came back from war and had no job and wasn't it interesting to see who was wearing the Mickey Mouse ears?

Thanks Myrl! You gave me a lot to think about today!!!

Myrl, I also lived in Chicago for a long time so Vivian Maier is of special interest to me as well. I think I actually saw this documentary some time ago. I enjoyed her work enough to go to the website a while ago to purchase a print...still deciding and thanks for this reminder.

Myrl, this is very interesting. I followed the links to the Vivian Maier site that has some of her photographs. I noticed she did take a few "selfies" as well... photos taken of herself in mirrors and store windows.

Aloha Myrl, that fascinating aspect to me is how close Ms. Maier's work came to disappearing from the human collective. If that gentleman had not taken the time to examine the work, would we know her today? Fascinating!

Kimo Stowell - I had similar thoughts.  What if any other person had bought that collection.  The outcome could have been so very different.  But, that gentlement, not only saw how extraordinary her work was, but had the fortitude to truly search Vivian Maier's life out, so she could be known.

Myrl, I finally tapped into the video, and I want MORE! This kind of story is always so intriguing to me...the packrat, the nanny, the unknown secret life. LOVE all of it AND the discovery of the fellow who found the negatives and that it is a Sundance film. Beyond exciting.
