It is what it is!

By
Real Estate Agent with ReMax Realtec Group

There are two phrases that tend to confuse real estate people.

They are: "It wasn't meant to be' and "It is what it is."

Many responses on Active Rain reflect nearly all believe such responses are reflections of a lack of commitment on part of the speaker. Embracing that interpretation means we have failed in understanding the real courage behind those words spoken assuming you are working with a client who values you as a professional and they have committed to doing business with you.

This is important stuff...$600 an hour stuff if you were in a private office.

These folks may well understand what we do not.
They may understand an inherent arrogance that denies reality. They may understand that to be whole is to put our arms lovingly around everything we've shown ourselves to be:

  • self -serving and generous,
  • spiteful and compassionate,
  • cowardly and courageous,
  •  treacherous and trustworthy.

We must be able to say to ourselves and to the world at large "I am all of the above."
If we can't embrace the whole of who we are - embrace it with transformative love - otherwise, we'll imprison the creative energies hidden in our own shadows and flee  the world's complex mix of shadow and light.

Walking in Vulnerability
These 'wasn't ment' and "it is" folks are walking towards their fear. They are walking towards you wearing their venerability,,,and you may be invalidating them by your assumption.

Behind their action, behind their words  is the struggle....that struggle is to avoid shame. To avoid the isolation that surrounds those events of shame. The origin of this emotion is not having people around them to process shame emotions correctly. There was no dinner table talk, no regular meals together, no exhibition of the skill of turning towards....so they embrace what they have experienced and struggle to avoid events that could lead to shame.

I am Enough!
What these folks are saying, in a condensed sense, is they are moving from living disappointed to feeling disappointed. What our ears and eyes need to accept is these courageous folks may have stepped into the light following a trail of the long lonely to revelation from 'what people think' to 'I am enough."

At the exact same time
Can you know that these people who walk in venerability are afraid and brave at the exact same moment..all day long. They have no gaurantee how others will repond to their vulnerability.

Take this thought home with you.

What they are looking for is HOPE,
Hope is a function of struggle through which we learn when we experience adversity, have trustworthy relationships. Then people have faith in our ability to get them out of a jam.

My wish is you no longer invalidate these people but understand they have a different take on what you have convinced yourself to be true.

"It wasn't meant to be."
"It is what it is."

Statements that contradicts the vanity of mankind, the American Spirit, a culture that says "All things are possible," "Fight the good fight" when clearly this is not true. This IS NOT surrender, but embracing that which is of themselves and bring forth from that awareness of the fullness of whole hearted living.

"It wasn't meant to be." "It is what it is."
I hear you. Come walk with me a while. I WILL see you and not look through you.

Maybe, just maybe, they know something we don't know.

Annette,  First of all, how the heck have I not been following you?

I've read this three times.  I love it.  It's pretty deep and deeply spiritual.  I love it. We all need to realize our perspective is only that ... and it becomes our reality ... not truth.

Very thought provoking.  There's a lot of unsubstantiated chest pounding and bravado among some.  Maybe it's due to a lack of validation elsewhere.

Kathleen Daniels , thank you, thank you.
There is always more behind what we see. Asking 'Is there more?' can open the portal of understanding for those who care.

David Barr You are right. Those who were young, who saw the fear of their parents and their worry during the WTC attacks have a different take on 'bravado' than those who preceded them.

Good morning Annette. As I read your post, what immediately came to mind was a quote that I head, "You are always going to get where you are going".

Love you post, makes great sense.

Thank you Joe Petrowsky for taking time to leave a comment.

The quote is provoking continuation. "If you can't be happy where you are at, you won't be happy where you are going."

When folks are chatting about moving, I always try to get them to make sure they are moving for the right reason. And some realized moving was not the right response. Then I ask myself...."AHHH, what did I just do?"

Annette- Well done. It is want is is and it is what it will be are submissive. And passive. And, well, you get the idea. To lead you need confidence, which you have demonstrated.

Cheers,

Tom

Annette Lawrence , Palm Harbor, FL 727-420-4041 - excellent thoughts - and this ultimate statement is...

"This IS NOT surrender, but embracing that which is of themselves and bring forth from that awareness of the fullness of whole hearted living."

Congrats on well deserved gold star.

A very interesting post.   One of my favorite replies to "it is what it is"  ... "but it's not what it seems".

Oh Annette, you have a gift and to answer your question on the Q&A I will go back there. This is a good read but time doesn't allow too many of these a day because it is a slow read, requires pausing and thinking and even some rereading.

Noah Seidenberg Yes you can say "it is what it is" but I think your expression will have origin in the deeper waters of self examination.

Joan Whitebook "but it not what is seem!"  PRICELESS.

Thank you so much for reading and leaving a comment.

Bob Crane thank you for your generous comments.

Debbie Reynolds a gift? It just my 'little light.' Pausing, thinking, rereading, suggesting readers will not invest the time and energy to engage and will skip blogs with the sunset and plam tree image? That is my concern.

Thomas F. Scanlon "it is what it is" and "it wasn't meant to be" are perceived as passive. However, does not that contradict the commitment a buyer has made to look at 25 houses, submit offers on 4?

This buyer is not passive, but will obscure their vulnerability by saying 'if it doesn't happen, it wasn't meant to be." Try to see this as the mindset that enables this buyer to not live disappointed (I can not find a house) but to feel disappointed (I am still looking for a house).

During that 'hunting process' we have established a good relationship, have demonstrate we've got their back, and in saying, 'It is what it is" they are conveying they have placed their trust in US and confident we can get them out of a jam.

We should not see this as passive or surrender, but our moment in the Sun...to do the stuff we really know how to do.

@pratful thakkar, Thank you. You have identified a most meaningful line in the blog. A foundational understanding that allows us to be fully present in this moment. our brokenness as well as what we believe to be our perfection.

Sharon Tara I hear you. Comfort food.

Contemplating your experience I can see "It wasn't meant to be" is a wonderful way to break the soul tie to an object allowing one to face the future unencumbered. Comfort food for the soul.

I LOVE IT!

The important thing to remember is people can't be changed. Try as we might, or love them as we might, they can only change themselves. The statement "it is what is," for me means coming to terms with those and also what can't be changed.
