The Wildflowers of Texas

The Beautiful wild flowers of Texas are anchored by the State flower of Texas. Here are some facts about the Texas Bluebonnet.

A hardy winter annual native to Texas. Adopted as the "State Flower of Texas", this is the most commonly seen variety along roadsides and in uncultivated pastures throughout the state. Flowers are densely arranged on a spike with a characteristic ice white terminal tip. Bluebonnets cannot tolerate poorly drained, clay based soils. Seed planted in poorly drained soils will germinate, but plants will never fully develop. Seedlings will become either stunted or turn yellow and soon die. Prefers a sloped area in light to gravelly, well-drained soil. Requires full sun

       Rose Angel

A hardy, upright annual very easy to grow from seed throughout much of North America. This Old World variety is regaining popularity for its consistent flowering over the long summer season.

 Wine Cup

A hardy, drought tolerant, sprawling perennial native to Texas and the central United States. The numerous trailing stems spread vinelike over the ground originating from a carrot-like tuber.

Now is the time to drive Texas and see these beautiful flowers.

Alan, On the way home Sunday we saw lots of people stopped along the side of the road taking pictures in the bluebonnets.  There were some very pretty spots.

Sometimes, I find myself stopping out in the middle of no where just to look at the grand site. This is the best time to live in Central Texas, everything is blooming. Have a great week Marchel

We have some in out area. It is hard to tell the difference sometimes between some wildflowers as they look the same from a distance.

Alan - Thanks for sharing. It  would be nice if they would last longer. I know they put off mowing the hiways until most of them have bloomed. Have you been over to the Wildflower & Seed company at Fredricksburg?

There are some areas where they aren't mowing around the flowers to show them off and people are getting upset that they are looking at weeds surrounding the beautiful flowers.  I love all the wildflowers this time of year.

Alan, pretty pictures, and thanks for the information and names, I did not know the other two.  Guess I'll be doing mine at midnight tomorrow night, this wedding has kept me too busy, but it's been fun.  Ricki is her and going to the office with me tomorrow for her coaching.  I got your note and good job on getting organized.  Keep throwing stuff away.  Your desk should be completely clean and clutter free so you can focus!  Before you leave everyday get in the habit of putting everything in it's place, and off your desk.  When you walk in your desk should not have anything on it, period, no excuses, OK?  Do you have a schedule done yet?  If so please send that and your goals to me as well as the top 3 things you want to start on with me.  I'm going to the lake Thursday and need to know what to have with me so we can schedule some calls while I'm there.  My cell does not work up at Limestone so I need to get you the phone # before I leave.  When you e-mail me the other things, let me know how to reach you.  Keep up the good work, L

Alan, I'm so sorry, I just saw this when I was posting the announcement of the winners for our contest.  Yours was not with all the others, so it did not get judged, you had to have it tagged with, April Wildflower Contest, all together and if you put anything after you had to separated by a coma.  See the tags on the ones in the contest.  I feel really bad because I had seen this, but did not even click with me...so sorry.  Please enter the BBQ contest and it's the same way, the tag has to been exact at the beginning, and a coma separating anything after.  I just feel awful.  Liz

Liz:

No problem. I actually did not even know about the contest it just thought this was a good idea for a post.
