It won’t be long before we’re saying farewell to summer and hello to school days. It’s never too early to begin planning for a successful school year. Gather school supply lists, make a note if important dates, and check out back to school sales. Ashley Kimble Slaughter is pleased to bring you information that will help begin the school year on a positive note.

Shenandoah is served by the East Baton Rouge Parish School District. Schools in the area include Shenandoah Elementary School, Riveroaks Elementary, Wedgewood Elementary School, Woodlawn Elementary School, Southeast Middle School, Woodlawn Middle School, and Woodlawn High School. Parochial schools in the area include Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, St. Jean Vianney Catholic School, St. Michael the Arch Angel High School, and Parkview Baptist Church School.

Important Back to School Dates

One of the joys of a new school year is getting to add all the important dates to a fresh, new calendar. While individual schools may have their own important dates, the dates provided here are noted throughout area schools.

Back to School Supplies for Shenandoah Schools

Most elementary schools recognize the same school supply list, but there are a few exceptions. The following school supplies are common supplies needed for grades K – 5.

·         Case-it binder (no book sack) labeled with student’s name. Kindergarten students are to have a book sack (no wheels) labeled with student’s name.

  • ·         1 roll of paper towels
  • ·         1 box of Kleenex
  • ·         1 box of band-aids
  • ·         1 pack of store brand hand wipes
  • ·         1 box of quart sized plastic bags (girls purchase)
  • ·         1 box of gallon sized plastic bags (boys purchase)
  • ·         1 pack of 3x5 index cards (no lines) (K- girls purchase): Kindergarten only – 5x8 (boys purchase)
  • ·         1 6-pack of glue sticks
  • ·         1 8-ounce bottle of school glue
  • ·         2 marble composition books
  • ·         1 pair Fiskers scissors for kids, blunt tip
  • ·         1 plain school box, regular size or zipper bag
  • ·         Pocket folders with prongs – Kindergarten: 2 ; All other grades: 5 (one of each color - red, yellow, blue, green, and purple)
  • ·         2 boxes of crayons – 24-count – classic colors
  • ·         2 12-packs of pencils

Kindergarten Only

  • ·         1 box of markers

Grades 1 – 5

  • ·         2 packs of loose leaf paper (wide-ruled)
  • ·         1 Ruler (inches/centimeters) (grades 2-5)
  • ·         2 yellow highlighters (grades 2, 4, 5)
  • ·         1 pack of red pens (grades 3-5)
  • ·         1 pack of colored pencils (grades 3-5)
  • ·         1 pack of markers (grades 4-5)
  • ·         6 one-subject spiral notebooks, 2 reds, 2 yellow, 2 blue (grades 4-5)

Shenandoah Elementary School has the following requirements in addition to those listed above.

Kindergarten Only

  • ·         1 additional box of Kleenex
  • ·         2 additional 6-packs of glue sticks
  • ·         3 additional boxes of crayons, 24 count, classic colors
  • ·         4 dry erase markers, Expo brand
  • ·         1 1-inch white binder
  • ·         1 pack of construction paper
  • ·         1 pack of paper plates
  • ·         1 pack construction paper (assorted)
  • ·         1 art sketch pad (spiral bound)
  • ·         1 heavy duty pencil bag ($3.50 bought from school)

Grades 1-5

  • ·         1 additional 6-pack of glue sticks (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         2 additional marble composition notebooks (wide ruled) (grades 1, 2, 3)
  • ·         4 additional marble composition notebooks (wide ruled) (grades 4 and 5)
  • ·         3 additional boxes of crayons, 24 count, classic colors (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         2 additional 12-pack of pencils (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         1 art sketch pad (spiral bound) (grades 1-5)
  • ·         8 black dry erase markers (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         1 pack of construction paper (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         4 thin yellow highlighters (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         1 hand-held pencil sharpeners (grades 1 and 2)
  • ·         2 8-ounce bottles of school glue (grade 2)
  • ·         1 additional pair of Fiskers scissors (grade 2)
  • ·         2 multi-colored packs of highlighters (grade 2)
  • ·         2 assignment notebooks ($3.50 bought from school) (grades 2-5)
  • ·         1 heavy duty pencil bag ($3.50 bought from school) (grades 1-5)
  • ·         2 3-pack pink pearl erasers (grade 2)
  • ·         1 pack construction paper, assorted (grade 2)
  • ·         1 bottle hand sanitizer (grade 3)
  • ·         1 pack thin markers (grade 3)
  • ·         2 packs pencil erasers (toppers) (grade 3)
  • ·         1 additional pocket folder with prongs (orange) (grade 4)
  • ·         1 additional pack of pencils, sharpened (grade 4-5)
  • ·         1 additional roll of paper towels (grade 5)

In addition, students at Shenandoah Elementary School are expected to have book sacks no larger than 20”x13”, and they must have the capability of being hung on the back of the student’s chair. No wheeled back sacks are allowed. Cloth book covers are expected to be on all books that are taken to and from school. The school sells these for $3.50.

Riveroaks Elementary School has the following additions for their Pre-K students.

·         The student’s name (first initial and complete last name) must be inside their book sack along with the school name, grade, bus numbers, and two working telephone numbers with contact names.

  • ·         1 rest mat with child’s name labeled
  • ·         1 bath sized towel for nap time
  • ·         1 pillow case
  • ·         1 set of clothing

Southeast Middle School Information

Southeast Middle School will be holding their orientation on July 28th. Sixth grade students are expected to arrive at 10 AM. Seventh and eighth grade students are expected to arrive at 2 PM. Students will have a chance to meet school administrators and teachers, receive information, purchase spirit shirts for $10, purchase P.E. uniforms for $25, and SMS jackets for $20.

Students are expected to pay a school supply fee of $30 for a planner, library fee, technology fee, school activity fee, 1 royal blue sweatshirt, and 2 student IDs. Students should have paper, pencils, and pens when they begin classes. Additional items may be needed for projects and extra activities. Elective classes may have fees.

Students may not participate in extra-curricular activities, sports, or other events until all school fees are paid. All fees must be paid in cash or money orders, no checks will be accepted.

Woodlawn Middle School

Student’s attending Woodlawn Middle School may need these special items in addition to regular school supplies. Some materials must be left at school, so check with your child’s teacher to make sure the rules are followed properly and that they do need these special supplies. Students are expected to keep their supplies up through the year, as needed.

  • ·         Flash Drive to attach to ID lanyard
  • ·         Pencil bag with three rings to fit in English binder
  • ·         Graph Paper
  • ·         Geometry Kit (if taking Geometry)
  • ·         TI-83 Graphing Calculator (Algebra 1 and Geometry)
  • ·         $5 class fee (English class)
  • ·         $5 class fee (Science class)
  • ·         15 pocket folders with 3 prongs
  • ·         Pack of copy paper
  • ·         Color tab dividers

Woodlawn High School Information

Student book packs or book bags must be made of clear material or be mesh. Other materials will not be allowed at school. Students must have uniform shirts that are white or purple if they are upperclassman or black for Freshman Academy. The shirts must have the school’s logo on them. Sweatshirts can be purchased for $25 at the school office.

Back to School Sales

Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 10 AM – 1 PM. The Cortana Mall is having their Back to School Expo. The theme this year is One Team, One Mission. Besides specials throughout the mall, parents and students can pick up information on topics such as attendance zones, bus routes, health centers, school registrations, and specialized programs.

Ashley Kimble Slaughter It seems like schools are starting earlier every year AND requiring parents to purchase more and more of the supplies that should be purchased by the school (another topic, I'm sure). Great helpful post for those in Denham Springs, LA area.
