Confrontation is a word we don't like to hear. No one is naturally good at it and it is usually very uncomfortable. Unfortunately the need for it arises very often. Bullies do not disappear after we leave grade school.
I spent a good part of last evening talking with one of my leaders about leadership. The primary issue was their timid approach to leadership. No one was really bullying them or purposely trying to disrespect them. But since the leader was timid in leading, others were stepping forward because they sensed the absence of leadership and direction.
My leader was ready to quit, give up, slip away into the shadows, fold up her tent and go home. I told her you have to believe in yourself as much as I believe in you. You cannot be so sensitive. Leaders often do not have the luxury of dwelling on how the group feels about them.
Leadership is influence and not Title. No one follows a title into battle. We follow those who have demonstrated they care, are willing to stand on the front line and move purposefully through life.
When you get scolded and you will. DO NOT FOLD! Lead!
