I realize and respect that Barbara Schwarz coined the term Staging and has no doubt worked hard to get it used to represent what we do, but does it?

Its my understanding that the general public's perception of staging to be that of de-cluttering, neutralizing, fine cleaning and simple repairs.  And perhaps agents as well, which can help explain the resistance of the service; they already provide those suggestions.

What I don't believe to be represented is that our services also include:

  • An anyalysis of the target market,
  • Implement strategies to highlight attractive features and downplay unattractive,
  • Assess what features of the home to invest in improvements to increase market value,
  • Help organize clients with their move for times pre-packing is necessary,
  • Act as a contractor for trades people,
  • Make colour recommendations,
  • Help promote the property

I know my company is only one year young so who am I to challenge one person's term to represent an industry, but hey that is just who I am, but I will fall into line once this is discussed.

Being a newbie, I would love to know if I am missing anything.  But here is my question... Is there a better term to represent our industry?

Hmmmm...a better term, that is a hard one but I know where you are going with this.  We tend to wear many hats in our business and staging as you stated refers to many things in the process.  We are helping to market the home to its best postential. I would say "Home Marketers' , but not sure if I really like the flow of this.  I would love to hear other ideas with this one.

Magician comes to mind but I suppose that label has a lot of baggage.

James...so glad you are back! Tina, I am so with you. I call it Point of Sale Merchandisers or Residential Resale Merchandising. I cannot change how2homestage.com at this stage of the game but am building other web sites addressing the name changes and descriptions. Good question.

I think I have heard someone use the term property stylist.  I like it better, but am afraid it would require just as much explanation.

Property stylist reminds me of hair stylist. I just can't get past that one.

Sheron - I hadn't thought of that, but you are right. I was just thinking Real Estate Aesthetics Specialist, but that is too l o n g.

I like that one Ann, Property Presentation Consultant.  However, I think at this stage in the game we will have to explain just about any title we go by as most people do not get it - until I say there are shows on HGTV and then everyone is like "oh, yeah - I know what you are talking about".

Sandra -

I think you are absolutely right.  No matter what we choose, we will have to explain and I do not think any one title will cover all of what we do.  We may just have stick with what we have, since that is all that is being presented in the marketplace right now.  The only thing I have ever heard it called is a marketing expert, but then that is not quite accurate either, is it?

People are hard enough to train, so I don't think we should change the term "staging" but we do need to continue to educate everyone we contact on a daily basis in this business.  We pretty much have to stick with the term now and thats not a bad thing.  The image we give the term through our daily investment of time and energy and how we project what we do is what is critical.

Ever since I became a stager I see them everywhere!  We stage ourselves, we stage our cars for sale and those of us who make houses "pop" stage.  I use the HGTV thing too.  I hate to do it but it just cuts through and folks get it.  Its like reducing a sauce, the more concise and precise the better.  One word is good, easy to remember and we are lucky one word comes so close!    Carol

Kim: I agree with you that "marketing expert" is too generalized. Even "property marketing expert" doesnt quite correctly describe it either. All I know is that "staging" is preparing a house for sale - maybe something with redesign/ redefine home space, etc. would describe it better. But then again, I'm not a stager.

Tina,

The terms "Property Stylist" and "Home Merchandising Specialist" are also apt descriptions for what it is that we do.

I hope that I'm not repeating any comment that was already made, but I always read the post and comment immediately before reading what everyone else wrote so that I will not be taking anyone else's words!
