The Speed of the World

This evening we went for our daily walk on the beach. We first went south, and then, couple of miles later turned north. There were more people than what I usually see on Thursday. I saw people on the balconies and by the condo pools, and it was unusual. You never see people on balconies in Daytona…

And we kept walking. A lady that we regularly meet on the beach was coming towards us. Beside usual “hi” she asked us whether we were missing the launch. We turned heads, and yes, the rocket was quickly making its way through the clouds. And in short few seconds it was gone…

And I had my bulky camera in a rucksack on my back… Oh well…

We kept going and I was turning to see how the “tail” was fading. And then still got the camera and took this photo. These white small clouds are actually the tail of a rocket.

Just think about it. We can miss an event and not even notice something, which 100 years ago was not even a dream…

We used to be glued to the TV when rockets launched... it was all new.

Judi K Barrett - oh, I still remember the first manned flight on April 12, 1961. Yuri Gagarin.

in 1961 in our neighborhood there were only two families, who could afford a TV, and we - a bunch of kids - would all sit on the floor and watch... It is still in my memory as if it happened yesterday

Beautiful and exciting.  We were at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando one evening when the hotel announced they were opening up their rooftop for people to go up and watch a launch.  Amazing.

That's one walk on the beach you'll be able to reflect upon for years!  Great photo and you are so right - life and technology are moving SO fast these days - it seems as though it's gone into turbo mode this last decade too.

Sussie Sutton - I hear you. What I like about Florida is that we generally have good weather, and I not longer have days, when I think that I want tomorow to come today...

Every deay is a day of living... And I remember how, when we were living in the Arctic, you thought of skilling the whole snowy season, and it lasted 10 months :)

Aloha Jon,

with the spate of launch mishaps it's getting very dicey to launch satellites these days. The launch costs alone are in the the hundreds of millions of dollars forget the technology sitting in the pay load. On that note there is something quite profound in witnessing a rocket escape the atmosphere and reach outer-space. Thanks for sharing.

Kimo Stowell - the problem is that this is the same old that mistakes is how we learn, how we progress. When we reach that height, the cost of mistakes is enormous, but we still make them, as it is part of learning. Jon, unfortunately, the space program - whether private or governmental - seems to have taken a back seat as far as publicity goes.  It is still amazing to see every time you get a chance!

Jon Kolsky - so right. I made me think that before, when life was a little slower, moving from one place to another were part of life, and seems like right now they are compressed into few hours on a plane on in a car, and life is only when we get to the destination.

It like getting on a plane for the first time, and we look down and we see so much... but fewer details
