History in Every Bite: St. Roch Market

If you were to ask a New Orleans local about what you should do here, I can guarantee you'll get an a more colorful answer than "Go to the French Quarter!" In fact, they may just direct you just outside the Quarter to the surrounding neighborhood, the Marigny, that has recently experienced a boom in activity.

Some may contribute the new-found bustle to this year's re-opening of the St. Roch Market, a historic landmark built in 1875. Before Katrina damaged the building, the Market served as a marketplace for fresh goods and New Orleans spirit. Nearly 10 years after the storm, in spring 2015, the market returned with full force, serving up local dishes made by local chefs using local ingredients.

Step inside the stunning Market!

The vendors line the sides of the building, and people happily munch on their creations at the tables indoors and on the spacious patio. The seating outside overlooks a NOLA neutral ground overflowing with live oaks that have grown there since before the orignal market's construction.

Pick up a fresh juice smoothie from Juice NOLA, a pulled pork crepe from Dirty Dishes, or a plate homemade bread pudding from The Sweet SpotCheck out some of the dishes my family and I ordered below!

Now are you interested? In all, this lunch hotspot is a great choice for all people! The kids will adore the sweet treats, and the adults can enjoy a different kind of treat from the full-service bar. The best part about it all? A free parking lot across the street. Check out St. Roch Market's website and Facebook page for more information, and head over to escape the heat with your family!
