Strange HOA Rules

I dont care much for hoa other than they keep the communities clean and i think thats all they should be for.

Homeowner Associations (HOAs) can be very beneficial. They help maintain neighborhoods and keep property values high. While most HOAs have rules and regulations that make sense, there have been some outrageous HOA rules we’ve seen. Sometimes board members interpret the rules to fit their own personal preferences. Here are five examples of strange HOA rules or those that went a little too far:

  1. Neutral Colors Only: Forget about expressing yourself through the exterior color of your home. There are actually many HOAs that restrict outside door and trim colors to neutral colors only.
  2. No footwear on the porch: There have been documented examples of some homeowners being fined for having muddy, or even clean, shoes on the porch outside their doors.
  3. Matching Shingles. Absolutely no exceptions: A man in Florida tragically lost his wife and infant son when a plane crashed into their home. When he started rebuilding the home, the HOA fined him for having shingles that didn’t match.
  4. No parking in your own driveway: If you have a garage, some HOAs will prohibit you from having a vehicle in your own driveway for more than 24 hours.
  5. No playing outside: Believe it or not, there is more than one case of HOAs trying to prohibit children from playing outside. In one case, an HOA board member claimed playing outside was “dangerous” for kids. In that same case, parents threatened to sue the HOA board, so the board postponed their vote.
  6. No Citrus Trees or palms of any kind

In most situations, you won’t have problems with your HOA as long as you comply with the rules and regulations, which are generally voted on and put in place to benefit the community. However, before purchasing a home with an HOA, always read the rules and regulations first so you are familiar with them and don’t get sideswiped by strange HOA rules or outrageous fines.

We have pretty much all of those rules.  The no citrus is usually for snowbirds.  They are not here to pick up the fruit so it's a buffet for rats.  The car in the driveway sometimes drives me crazy especially when we had 3 cars and a small 2 car garage.

I'd say 4, 5, & 6 are kind of getting a little to restrictive. I can understand outside colors etc.

They do get out of hand, I had one client that had a beautiful landscaped front yard put in, the HOA had him remove the new plants calling them "weeds". So he went back to the builder generic boring front yard.

We have seen similar "rules" here as well.  No cars parked in the driveway. No water hose left visible from the street. No commercial vehicles of any kind parked in the driveway (poor plumbers, carpenters, etc).

Yes, read the HOA rules and regulations BEFORE you buy.

It does seem like FL is famious for all of these HOA rules and sometimes they appear written for the benefit of the Boards!

HOA covenants may be viewed as protective or restrictive. I am not a fan of HOAs.  Too many arguments arise due to board members doing stupid things and getting bloated egos when wielding power over others.
