Societal Changes the Way We Use Our Homes - Threading Needle Day 7/25/15

Thread the Needle day July 25, 2015How often do we thread a need these days?  I don't think nearly as many people thread a needle today as did 50 years ago...  If we do, it probably more often done in connection with a hobby and than as a necessity; such as embroidery.

A Designated Sewing Room used to be an important and luxurious addition to a home when more clothing was home-made and threading a needle was a common, almost every day occurence.

An un-needed bedroom is often turned into a sewing room as the nest empties if someone still desires a sewing room.  More often, though, if there is a sewer in the family, a sewing area is a corner somewhere as part of another room.

The Beginning of The Sewing RoomI do have a sewing room. My loving husband framed in and converted one end of our sun-room into a sewing room for me.  When we started it, I thought I had plenty of room... that it was going to be too large.. but as I gathered my "stuff" up it filled up.  I love old sewing machines and have 8 treadles. Then add in a serger, an embroidery machine, a regular sewing machine.. and miles and miles of fabric, lace, elastic,  a million or so buttons, a filing cabinet full of patterns... you get the idea.    Here's some images of when we first started filling the room and then as it got FULL.

sewing on treadle machineA couple of the treadle machines that I had purchased did not work and one was only the base.  Janome makes a NEW treadle sewing machine head that zig-zags, sews buttons on, etc.. so I had purchased a couple of those for my bases.  One of those became the sewing machine for Christopher, my grandson since he wanted to learn to sew.  He has a quilt about 1/2 way pieced now.  I often get requests for land that is "Off The Grid".  This sewing machine is definitely Off The Grid AND provides a little exercise while using it!  It sews a great stitch and is a JANOME!  By way of disclosure, if you purchase one of these through the link, Amazon send me 4% of the purchase price. :)

Very interesting. Thanks for telling us about your sewing room.  Some of your readers will now be wishing for a sewing room of their own.

We just gained a new bedroom as our daughter moved out this winter. Wayne and our son wanted a "man cave." Ha. So when I was painting it (I do all the room painting), I chose very pale pink. By the time they noticed, it was too late, and now I have a lovely craft room which serves as a spare bedroom when our daughter comes to visit :)

I have a sewing corner but now that you mention it I haven't seen one in a listing for a very long time. Society is changing and I guess they take their mending to the cleaners or buy something new and throw the old away.

Here in Naples, because we're a relatively new city, I have only seen one sewing room.  It was a huge bonus room over the garage that held everything very orderly.  Impressive.
