The Magic Formula Of A Featured Post

By
Real Estate Agent with Relocating To Baton Rouge & Surrounding Areas

This morning I was blessed with a fabulous "AHA" moment. The moment came when brainstorming what it takes to get featured on ActiveRain. Those of you who are from the old school already know the formula, but I thought I would share personal insight for those that are still trying to figure out the feature formula.

The Magic Formula Of A Featured Post

Material
Layout
Length
Images
White Space

getting-a-featured-post-on-active-rainMaterial + Content- It doesn't happen overnight. Many of us weren't not born to blog and very few of us have a degree in journalism. How can you learn to write good material? It's called "practice", young grasshopper. You'll eventually 'get it'. The more you write the more your skills will improve but never compare yourself to other bloggers. We are all unique and with time, you will be "one" with your blog.

Layout- In the beginning, I had no idea how to blog. I am going to take a second to embarrass myself and show you one of my first blogs. Check Out One Of My First Blogs. Try not to laugh, now. Now, check out one of my recent blogs. See the difference? The more we blog, the more we grow and you'll be surprised how fast you can morph into a blogging ninja.  Your blog design and layout are extremely important as this can make or break your success. You should focus on writing short paragraphs in addition to using images to break up your content and cut out any filler words. Try to stay away from using words that end in 'ly'; most of the time they are filler words that take up space with little value.

getting-a-featured-post-on-active-rainLength- I am still guilty of this. Blogs should be at least 500 words or less; any more than this and you will lose your readers. Check out this word counter, this allows you to count your words before you post. Sometimes our blogs must be long in order to explain a point or a technique, but try to keep it short and to the point.

Exposure- You will not reach the 'featured' status if readers have no idea you exist. Since the readers of ActiveRain are the ones who star a post, you must get out in the rain and get exposure. In order to get exposure, you must subscribe to other bloggers and take the time to get involved with conversation by leaving valuable comments. Most of the time, members will return the favor by checking our your blog and if you're lucky...they might even subscribe. So, in order to get exposure you must wiggle your way into the community, stay active, write quality content and tap dance in pink tights.

Good luck on your blogging journey and I'll see you in the rain.

Excellent points on writing a blog.  I particularly agree with the length of the blog being 500 words or less.  Too many ADD folks out there (including me) to worry about something to long.

Nice post Lindsay, I really have no idea why some get featured and others not. I have written posts that I thought for sure were powerful contenders and others that I did not and they were sometimes the ones featured. It all depends on whether someone thinks it "worthy" and flags it. You make good points here though!

I never even noticed that flag below the blog until I read this thread!  That's nice to know because I've come across some threads I think are definitely feature worthy.

THANKS!! I didn't know the flag was how your article got featured - I thought it was the magical ActiveRainGods that took the time to read each and every article to find the most pertinent and fantastic...ok, i just didn't know how so I made that up.  Glad to know now so I can give props to the articles I really enjoy!

Thanks Lindsay....I think you're right on about keeping it brief.  Layout is even more important - a well laid out blog is easier to scan through and find pertinent information if someone doesn't want to read the whole thing .

Thanks for an amazing post, Lindsay!  You really opened my eyes to how I can improve my blog posts and their results.  And now I can pass the word along to the agents I coach.  Thank you!

Very nice theory but I still believe the old saying "its not what you know its who you know" has much more to do with features then you realize.  Ever see a feature star before the first comment?   Good Luck!  You may get featured just to prove me wrong.....

Lindsay, Well done!!

Getting "Featured posts" has always been a mystery. I've been fortunate to have a bunch of them. More than anybody and I'm still not quite sure why. I do know that getting featured is all about marketing yourself. Your point about exposure is very very important. Participating by reading and commenting on other's post is the best way to get noticed. Of course once you are noticed you have to be able to back it up with well written, relevant, original and entertaining content.

I also feel being consistent with what you write is very important. When folks click over to your blog that have to know what to expect. For example, if you are writing 10 posts in a row for Localism and every now and then you throw in a very good "community" post chances are it will get lost in the shuffle. Why? Because it is not consistent with what you normally write.

You also do NOT have to be a good writer. BUT.....you do have to be a good communicator. You have to be able to get your point across AND make people think. My goal is to get a reaction. One way to do this is to not give all the info in the post. Make a point but leave room for discussion. Invite the reader to participate in the conversation.

The most important thing is to be yourself. Find your own style and then stick with it.

AND....don't post too often. What works for me is every other day. I do this to build anticipation in my readers.

A list of key points is:

  1. Catchy title
  2. Eye appealing post
  3. Original content
  4. Educational
  5. Entertaining
  6. Inviting

OK I need to stop because I have exceeded my 500 words :)

Dan- It might be a bit of 'who you know, but I believe it's "who knows you". Someone must know that your blog even exists to get featured, therefore you must know people and people must know you. It's hard to get featured when you are not doing "online fellowship" with other bloggers. There are thousands of blogs on AR and it is easy to be looked over. You have a voice and there are certain techniques to follow to be heard.

Bryant- Whoa Nelly, I think you just did a blog within a blog. Awesome! This is fabulous info! I think YOU need to do a post on this, you've pretty much got it down!

Lindsay, I still think being a feature is one of the mysteries of the universe. Some very dumb posts are featured and other terrific posts are not. I think most of us still haven't figured this out. I agree with Audrey that it seems like a crap shoot. Like TV news I think the entertainment value has something to do with it. I think most blog readers don't even know about the red flag. It's a symbol there but it doesn't have any text around it on what it means so it is not obvious, unless you scroll over it.

Gary- I am wondering if the AR Gods look for the amount of people that hit the red flag for your post. Like "Okay, after four people want this post to be featured, we will feature it". Or, do the AR Gods have to think themselves that it's feature worthy for it to get featured?

Lindsay- Well, it all depends on when the AR gods are watching. You got to try to figure out when they are scanning the Rain and then time your post to be before their eyes. They do not have xray vision and they are still human, somewhat:). If they are sleeping then you won't get featured unless of course people are flagging your post to get featured. I have had posts featured when no one flagged it to be featured.

Exposure is your best point. There are lots of featured posts from people who do not know how to write or who do not write well. But they picked a topic of interest and have the exposure of people following them. If you are not reaching out to others in friendship you will not get featured. It is all part of the paying it forward thing and the circle of blog.

Bryant made some excellent points.

Lindsay, your point about exposure is right on the money.  If no one is yet reading your blog, the chances for one of them being flagged for featured goes way down.  We need to establish readership first.
