If you have lived in the same town for a number of years you have seen places come and go.. some were favorites and some you barely noticed.   I've been in Manhattan Beach since 1969 and have seen many changes in the downtown scene over the years.  A few weeks ago I was  walking in downtown with a friend and we were talking about how sad it was to lose Old Venice , El Sombrero and the other stores that caught fire at Christmas. We wondered when they would rebuild and how different the new places would be from the originals. Across the street was a big hole in the ground where Pete's had been. As we walked through town we noticed the old  Good Stuff was another hole in the ground that will soon be office condos. We both started reminiscing about the places we missed that had been here when we moved to Manhattan Beach in the late 60's and early 70's.
Here's the list we came up with.. feel free to add any of your favorites that we missed.

There's always a movement to keep "(insert name) Beach Funky"; I think that's what gives our beach towns so much character.

I grew up in Manhattan Beach too.  I went to Manhattan heights, Foster A Begg, and Aviation High School.  I am still a Falcon. I even attended Flavios.  I remember going to the Toy Loan and adopting a doll.  I remember Lee Hortons, workded there for years.  It was made famous in the movie "Blow".  I remember going to the LaMar with 50 cents, and having 15 cents of it for candy.  We lived on Redondo Avenue and shopped at Borders and Royal foods.  There were 11 moms in our neighborhood named Betty.  I miss it every day, dream about it at night.  Every time I see the pier on T.V.  I yell "Hey, theres my pier!"   Thanks for the memories.........

Hi;

My family moved to the "Liberty Village Annex" in 1952 and we lived in MB until 1966, the year I graduated from Aviation.  It's amazing to think of the loyalty that exists to a school that ceased to exist over twenty years ago. I was back in town two years ago for my father's wake, and Manhattan is very, very different than it was in the '50's and '60's.  At an AHS reunion four or five years ago, some of us "old timers" were sharing memories of Brown field and Pollywog pond and the old library, when a couple of 'new' residents overheard us.  They asked if we still lived there, and the usual response was, "none of us can afford it now."  I will always think of Manhattan as my hometown, though my heart's in Hawaii.  It's there I'll retire in a few years (I'm a U Hawaii graduate twice over), but I suppose I'll always come back to the pier and reminisce about how great it was growing up in the South Bay during the '60's, when our lives were exactly like the Beach Boys were singing about!

 P.S.  Royal Foods!!  There used to be Food Giant...and Clancy's hamburgers...and the Fractured Cow....

Hi Rob,

Thanks for sharing.. I got here in the late 60's.. started coming to the beach when i went to UCLA and then moved here in 1969.. Yes it really has changed and yet in some ways it is still the same.. I loved the old Library.. and I do remember the Fractured Cow.. Clancy's was before my time.. as was Food Giant.. It really was a different time.. we were not nearly as sophisticated as kids are today.. If you have any old pics and would like to share it would be wonderful...

Thanks again for visiting..

Hi Kaye!

My mom is visiting from Seattle, and just two days ago we chilled out in Manhattan, walking on the beach, etc. My mom is fascinated with real estate as well, and she kept asking, "How much do you think that one's worth?" Being a Laguna Beach gal, I didn't know the particular range, but I kept thinking, "I'll bet Kaye would know!" I was imagining you narrating as we drove along, heheheh.
