Camping on Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick Canada
We had a great time camping in tents at the Hole in the Wall Campground on the island of Grand Manan, in New Brunswick, Canada. The camp sites were literally right on the cliff's edge, so extreme caution was required when stumbling around in the dark. It's been a very long time since we camped out in tents, but with the new equipment these days, it was pretty comfortable.
Grand Manan is a beautiful little island that ranks amongst the world's best, just like our favorite island Maui. It was just a short hike to the famous "hole in the wall" rock feature at the shoreline. This was at low tide, but just 6 hours later at high tide you could paddle your kayak through the hole! The Bay of Fundy is known for having some of the highest tides in the world, and it's quite amazing to see the changes that happen twice a day.
We loved to see the ferry boats coming and going from our campsite in the spruce forest. On foggy days and evenings you can hear the fog horn from the nearby lighthouse... every 20 seconds! At least our sites were far enough away that it was more or less just a soothing sound which made for an interesting sleep. From here we also saw whales, seals and sea birds.
A longer stay would have been fun, but we only had a few nights to spare. I would definitely recommend a trip to Grand Manan for anyone who loves to see beautiful scenery and quaint fishing villages. What a great place for a vacation home!
If you like seafood, you'll like eating here. We had the best mussels at the Sailor's Landing the first night, and lobster rolls and haddock the next day. What's a trip to Grand Manan without a good lobster dinner? We bought a bunch of live lobsters and put them in a cooler for the drive "home" and had a big feast the next night.
There's something about island life that's very appealing, and I know Maui has that same appeal. Let me know if I can help you with any questions about living on Maui.
