William

Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post.  My intent is to put a smile on your face.  Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know.  Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.

William was born in Latham AL in 1918.  He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  During WWll he flew more than 40 missions in the European Theatre where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Cluster.  Among the other medal was the Air Medal with Clusters.  But can you tell me what William is most noted for?  Well the rest of his name is William F. Smith Jr.  sadly he is noted for flying his B-25 Mitchell bomber into the Empire State Building in July, 1945.  Thankfully it was a Saturday and not many people were in the building.

1945 was just a couple of years before I was born, but at least 8 years before I came to the US to live... so I never heard this story about the Empire State Building, James. And I'm amazed since my Mom worked in the ESB for at leat 10 years starting in 1955.

Thanks everyone for stopping by.  Just FYI there was a fog and he almost crashed into the Chrysler Building.  He turned right when he should have turned left thus avoiding the history books.  Sadly he took the wrong turn
