Recently, we participated in a test of the mobile pay app for the Cheesecake Factory.  Their closest restaurant to Santa Barbara, in Thousand Oaks, (forty-minutes away) was the testing site for the app. You can download it in Google Play or the Apple Store. Participants were offered a complimentary slice of cheesecake.

 

We were wondering how restaurants were going to incorporate secure mobile pay options like Apple Pay or Android Pay because many guests like to split the check with their friends.  They thought of this, and also included a way to add a tip using a slide bar to increase or decrease the default 18% tip (no calculations needed). After a 3 second fingerprint scan on our phone (no signature required), a paperless receipt was emailed. Very cool!

 

Will every restaurant need an app to offer mobile payments, given the split check and tip component that is not part of purchasing other products or services? It is going to be interesting to see how this new trend unfolds.

Ron and Alexandra- there is an app called Dash that allows for this on a limited basis you might want to try.  I haven't been able to utilize it yet because I haven't been in one of their service areas.

Kathy Streib thanks for that info.  I will keep it in mind.  We admire the Cheesecake and it is our choice for elevated coffee shop, and quite often on the way to the airport, we will order a salad to go that we can pick up at curbside, which makes our life easier, so if they go ahead with this app nationwide, it will be even more useful for us.   A

Dick Greenberg we have been using Apple pay at Trader Joes mostly, and the convenience for us is great...actually Ron loves it, it is on his phone, I have the 5S.  This App was great too, and would be great in a business situation, when we pick up the check.  

As far as hacking, I am sure someone is at work already, just as someone is at work preventing hacking...we just keep our fingers crossed and move on.  A

 This is news to be it is very cool and I agree with Debb Janes because the app does not work or the system goes down though it has happened and we have to go back to the counter,,,but lately with the improvement in Wifi at airports it is easier!

Well, staying ahead of any trend right now is simply NOT blinking your eyes, because you'll miss it! I liked Debb Janes' comment. And 18%?? I always do 20% AT LEAST. Thankfully, it's up from 15% which used to be the norm for those cheapsters.

Alexandra I went with a client out to lunch about a month ago near the the SLS hotel and this little boutique hotel had  a good restaurant been there a few times...my client wanted to go here for lunch because he wanted to try out the reservation with the app and to pay with the app... little cumbersome but it got figured out...we had fun and he paid because he told me that they gave him a$20 incentive to try it out:)), Endre

Roy Kelley it is safter than handing someone your card.  The card info is on the phone and cannot be accessed without your fingerprint.  Trader Joes does not have the info on the card when you use it, only the bank does.  The transaction is encrypted and sent to the bank,  Next time you use it, there is a new encryption, it never stays on file like Credit Cards do on the computer.  We get an email of the transaction.  So far so good.
