If I Don't Like You It Doesn't Mean I Don't Like You

AR and the Like Button

The LIKE button became a feature of AR during my AR hiatus and upon my return it was immediately noticeable.  At the time, I couldn't figure out whether I liked the infiltration of Facebook-like features.  Well, I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm not a big fan of the AR "LIKE" feature.  I just seems so out of place here.

In my opinion, particularly with regard to my post, it simply means that I've read your comment.  It doesn't necessary mean that I liked your comment.  But you'll know that I've read it because I respond to EVERY comment and I'll call you by name in my response.

Same goes for a post that you may have written.   If I "like" it, sometimes it means that I actually "like" it and other times it means that I've simply read it.

I find that on my own post, I'll reply to a comment and am reminded that I didn't "like" the person's comment, when someone "likes" my post or another commenter's comment.  Then I'll go back and "like" their comment as a courtesy.  I always get the feeling that they'll feel left out if I've liked other's comments and didn't "like" theirs when in fact, I probably just forgot or simply overlooked the "like" button for which I'm not a fan of anyway.

Any who, this is just my Thursday morning ramblings.  Yeah I know.  It's child's play.  Don't pay me no nevermind.

Have an awesome day.

Tammy I have found myself doing that too (not "liking" if I don't agree with a comment but them respond to it in my own comment. On FB we don't even think about it. But here, we're so personal it just seems weird. And thanks for the compliment. I try:-).

Thanks Endre. I feel like I've come come. Liking so someone can get points is a good gesture. I did not realize that there were likes for points. I won't even go into where my thoughts shot to on that one.

Thanks Kathy. Glad to be back. Just during these last few comments, I think I've made up my mind on how I'm going to treat, use or not use the like feature. Oh and on the tagging, did you peep in my drafts post and see that that was my topic that I scheduled for today:-)?

Thansk Kathy for the spotlight.

HI Wanda and thanks.  It's good to be back.

Margaret, I totally "get" that.

This isn't Facebook (thank goodness) so why do we need to act like it is?

I don't think of using the like button very often, but when I do it's usually because a post or a comment really resonated with me.

I'd like to think that I do that as well Marte.  I'm more conscious of how I use it now. With FB, it's all so superficial and I never thought of AR as being that way.   The suggest feature was far more authentic if you ask me.

Charita, the "like" button is new to me, too. As I read people's comments, if I AGREE with what they say, and how they say it, I will "like" their comment as a way of saying "Congrats. Your reply was spot on and I agree with what you said". It's easier to "like" it than to write that sentiment every time I see something I like.

If I don't actually "like" it I'm pushing the LIKE button.  And I mean really LIKE it. It (on blog posts) serves the purpose as the old "suggest" button.  And I tag Charita Cadenhead to let someone know I'm responding to them on my post. No need to "like" their comment unless I really liked it.

I totally get this.  If someone comments on my post and I return the favor I will generally like it.  It the post is not one I do like I will not "like" it but may comment on it anyway, to repay the favor...

Hi Charita   = I would like to see the suggest button come back.. I think the like button is confusing both here and on FB.

Pat that seems to be the overriding theme and  a good practice.

Tammy I'm finding that people use the like button in a lot of different ways.  Some ways more than others.

Evelyn, I'll probably forgo the "like" if I'm going to respond to a comment anyway.

I'm with you Joan 101% on the "suggest" button.

I rarely use the like button.  Only if I read a comment that is really "right-on" in my mind, or if I read a post I just love. Otherwise, I use the comment feature to let the writer know what I thought.

Kat the commenting adds far more to the discussion than simply liking it.  It's the discussion that invites us to join in.

I have mixed feelings, I admit. I use it but not nearly as much as some, and I really have to feel that a post or comment really stood out for me. Not using the LIKE button doesn't mean I don't like what I read, it was just not a standout.  I think it gets overused and so the meaning perhaps is watered down. I always comment on a post when I like it - not true of everyone.

Glad to see you back!!

Jeff the overuse has made me not want to use it at all.  It's meaning has nearly diminished to nothing.  I think the people whose post we like, know whether we're authentically liking it or not.  At least those that know us better than others.  Thanks for the welcome.
