April in Western North Carolina begins the change of the seasons, as we usually see the last frost and last chance of snow, and know we have warm summer weather to look forward to. It's time to put up winter jackets, plant a garden, and look forward to longer days and more time to spend outside. However, for a lot of people in our area, there is one more thing to look forward to - spring is when all of the cruise-ins start. If you have a classic car, hot rod, street rod, or bike, here are the best places in Burke, Caldwell, and Alexander County to show off your ride this spring.

In Morganton, "Cruizin on the Square" started on April 13th, and will continue on the second Saturday of each month from 2pm to 5pm on the old courthouse square. There's no entry fee, free door prizes, and cash giveaways, so polish up your ride and cruise on in. For more information, email sidneysimmons@hotmail.com

Myra's Cruise in, Wachovia Parking Lot, Valdese, NC

In Valdese, Myra's Cruise In is every Friday night at 7:00 at the Wachovia bank building beside Myra's. It kicked off this year on April 6th, and draws people from all over Burke County and the surrounding area to show off their cars and admire those of other cruisers. The event includes DJ'd music by Tradewinds, and often draws up to 100 cars. Each night a raffle is held, with all of the proceeds going to the winner. This year, everyone bringing a classic car to the show will also be eligible for one of four $50 "door prizes". When the Valdese Family Friday Night Series kicks off on May 2, with free family entertainment, this will draw even more people to the Cruise In.

The Lenoir Downtown Cruisers sponsor the biggest cruise-in in the area, drawing 200-400 cars to line the streets of downtown Lenoir. This event happens every other Saturday night, from 4:30pm to 9pm. All drivers of a cruise in vehicle receive a free ticket for a chance to win one of the two cash drawings, and all children and ladies receive a free ticket for a chance to win a door prize. There is no admission fee, but the Lenoir Cruise-In organizers donate proceeds from the raffle ticket sales to local charities. For more information and information on special event nights, visit their website at www.lenoircruisers.com, or call Chip Strickland at 828-728-3811 or at 828-728-2456.
