Before you get all excited about this new development in my community, I want to make it clear that the "cat house" that has opened in Big Canoe does not house "little ladies of the night," unless they are of the feline persuasion. But honestly I did think that title might attract a bit of attention!
Maggie's House
The "cat house" that has recently opened in Big Canoe is actually a building to house rescued cats until they can be adopted. The Big Canoe Animal Rescue (BCAR) has recently opened,"Maggie's House" which will replace individual BCAR volunteers from having to foster cats and kittens in their homes. The house gets its name in honor of one of the BCAR volunteers who loves cats and was instrumental in the development of a cat shelter on Big Canoe property. Volunteers from the Big Canoe community now help take care of cats as well as the dogs that are in their dog shelter which houses eight dogs at one time. This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Canoe residents who may not be that fond of dogs, but are cat lovers instead, to volunteer their time and get as well as give some "kitty love."
Pet Adoption
Potential adotive families for the animals housed in both shelters can visit either the dog shelter or Maggie's House from 10:00 am till 1:00 pm on Saturdays to visit with potential new family pets, or by calling and making a separate appointment to visit the shelter.
BCAR
The BCAR shelter is a "no kill" facility and cares for dogs, and now cats, until they find their forever home with a new family. The animals in these two facilities are strays found inside of Big Canoe, or the pet of a Big Canoe resident who may have gotten loose and can stay there until their owner is notified and comes to claim them.
The approximately fifty volunteer staff members of the Big Canoe Animal Rescue is dedicated to providing a home for these pets. They also provide veterinary care, socialization, and training for the animals so that when the time comes for them to be adopted by a loving family, the animals will be prepared and house trained as well as behaviorly trained to be a welcome and well behaved addition to their new homes.
It is a pleasure to live in a community which not only cares for it's human residents, but its animal residents as well.
