Drowning Safety Awareness Month - Water Related Tragedies
Its not a fun topic, but its one that needs to be discussed. August is National Drowning Awareness Month. In Arizona, since January 1, 2015 we have had 21 water related fatalities (as of 7/22/2015). Of these 21 deaths 4 were kids under the age of 5. This is 5 too many.
The three steps to ensure this number doesn't rise: A) Adult Supervision. Whenever anyone is in or around water, pools, ponds, lakes, an Adult needs to be present to ensure all swimmers are safe. B) Barriers. For swimming pools, public and private, a pool fence with working (self closing) gate needs to be present, again, a barrier is not enough to prevent tragedy, but it is a layer of protection. C) Classes Virtually every city in the Valley offers some sort of classes during our summer months. The City of Phoenix has swimming lessons for as little as $3.
