I got a Bird in my SUV, What do I do?

By

Last night I was driving home after a long day of showing vacant land near Seligman, Arizona. I was on a lonely stretch of Highway 89 south of Ash Fork when I suddenly noticed the sound of a bird:

"C    H    I    R    P   chirp  chirp  chirp"

. . .

Then a little later

"C    H    I    R    P   chirp  chirp  chirp"

. . .

Still a little later

"C    H    I    R    P   chirp  chirp  chirp""

I started thinking, I want to see this bird when I get home. Maybe I should drive into the garage and close the door so I can see it when I get out.

Then I started to think:  "How did it get in here?"  I did not see a bird anywhere near my car before I set out.

I hope it is not hurt!

A little while later I started noticing that it never changed the sound from

"C    H    I    R    P   chirp  chirp  chirp"

and that it was repeating on a regular interval of about 30 seconds. After a few more cycles, car headlights appeared in my rear view mirror. I did not think too much about it until the car headlights got closer. Then I noticed: My rear window wipers were on INTERMITTENT. My bird problem was then solved.

The   "C    H    I    R    P   chirp  chirp  chirp"

sound was made by my rear window wipers!

Great story - my mother was with me one time on a trip to a new city and commented that she always heard the same bird at a particular corner crossing - I felt so badly telling her that it was the audible warning for a blind pedestrian that the light was changing!

I had to laugh at myself for being fooled by such a simply-explained sound.

HA!  That's funny.  I'm glad it wasn't actually a bird in the car, that could have been a little dangerous.

If you hear a hissing sound while your car is parked in the driveway, be careful, it might be a snake, or a hole in your tire.

Being the animal, nature and bird lover that I am ... glad to know it was not a bird and merely your rear wipers.

I can't even begin to pretend like that couldn't happen to me as well. I hope the weather is much better up there than it is down here right now!

So glad you found out about the wipers. Otherwise you might still be looking for that little birdie.

Time for new blades.

I actually had a bird fly and hit me in the back of the head.  I nearly wrecked. I nearly died of heart attack. (okay that part I exagerate, but just a tad).  I pulled over and opened my hatch and all the doors.  The bird flew out.  I had been putting up a sign and I guess it flew in as I was putting my sign up.

Tammy Lankford, that is a scary situation. It must have been quite distracting as well as disturbing.

I still feel pretty silly about my encounter.

The initial startle was pretty scary.  Luckily  I was feet from the driveway I'd put up the sign and on a country road.  After that initial startle I was more concerned about the bird hurting itself.
