We all want to be prepared... in life, for emergencies and for simple repairs. Based on an adapted list from LifeHacker, here is my list of 5 kits all households should have.
#1. Ready-to-Go Bag
This is your, "just about anything you would need at a moment's notice" bag. In case you need to leave your house immediately, this bag could come in handy. It will have certain items such as a couple water bottles, about $100 cash, extra set of house and car keys, flash light, copy of important documents (laminated) like photo ID and insurance and small first aid kit.
(Tip: Most cell phone cases allow for just enough space on the back between the cover and the phone for a $100 bill - always nice to have just in case)
#2. Household Repair Kit
This is the kit that you need just in case something breaks. I'm not talking about a big tool box or large case or anything, but a small kit for patches and those "oh crap" incidents. This might include; duct tape, leatherman, plumbers putty, WD-40, rags, lockpick, and a couple universal tools, like a hammer with nails in the head or a all in one tool.
#3. First Aid Kit
This one is a given; you should have one of these in your car and in you house at all times. This will include items such as bandages, safety pins, scissors, gauze, tape, wipes, tweezers, cold and hot packs, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic creams and ingestible medicine such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, cough drops and Aspirin.
#4. Disaster Kit
This is for more than a simple over-nighter. This should be your main, large bag in the garage or crawl space stocked with the essentials for some time. This might include cooking supplies, water, dehydrated meals, another first aid kits, can opener, warm clothes and blankets, toilet paper, wipes, hand sanitizer, basic all in one tools, and plastic bags. This should get you and your family at least 72 hours. A week is even better. You can buy food kits at Costco or Sams Club that can last one week up to a year for a family of 4.
#5. Office Kit
This is to be kept at your work in case something should happen there. You can store this in your desk or your car. It would include a sewing kit, basic medical supplies or small, pocket first aid kit, small all in one tool or leatherman, hygiene materials such as deodorant, lint roller or toothbrush.
It's always a good idea to be prepared but it's also smart to get your neighbors, friends, family and co-workers prepared too. You don't want to be the only one with the water during a zombie apocalypse. HA! Always better to be prepared for whatever life throws at you.
Some of these are worse case scenarios and some are just plane smart on a daily or weekly basis. For more tips stay tuned to my blog! I'd love to help you find the right home or offer buying and selling tips for all Palm Desert real estate and surrounding areas.
