You Never Know When Lighting Will Strike

“Mickey Mouse popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad . . .

When the business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself

were at their lowest ebb and disaster

seemed right around the corner.”

 Walt Disney 1901 - 1966, American Entrepreneur

As I see it . . . . . . .

You never know when lighting will strike

At that time of Walt Disney’s  . . . . career and the business was at an all time low and out of money.

Now the Rest of the Story . . . .

Walt was renting office space in Kansas City . . . . and was having a very difficult time in paying the rent on time. Walt approached the owner of the building . . . . and offered him shares of his company stock in exchange for rent.

Well you guessed it . . . . the owner of the building turned Walt down . . . . and a short time later Walt moved to California.

The idea for Mickey Mouse happened in Kansas City . . . . and once it was inked everything changed.

Through a close friend I had an opportunity to meet the owner of the building in Kansas City.

He told me that in his career he had made many good decisions . . . . and some that we would like to forget about.

He said one of the worst decisions he ever made . . . . was not exchanging rent in his building for stock in Disney’s company.

I asked him what was the deciding factor in not exchanging the rent for stock? He replied: when Walt Disney showed me the concept for Mickey Mouse “I thought he was a brick short of a load” . . . . and that people wouldn’t pay to see a mouse cartoon characters in the movies.

I then asked him how he felt about the decision today. He said “that if he exchanged the rent for stock that he would have made a lot of money from the stock then the rent on the office space . . . . And that it was one of his worst decisions ever”.

He when on to say . . . . “that stock would have far more valuable than his building.”

You never know when lighting will strike . . . . But when it does . . . . you have to be ready to take advantage of it.

Lou, that WAS a bad decision, but at the time it probably seemed like a good decision.

It is hard to be prepared for lighting to strike, especially when it comes in the form of a risk to take or not to take.  I have heard many similar stories, such as the owner of Netflix offering to sell his company to Blockbuster for $50 Million, but they didn't accept.  I think Blockbuster is now out of business or at least heading in that direction and Netflix is worth almost $20 Billion, haha.

Lou, This is my favorite post of yours. Very interesting. The woods are full of "wrong decisions." Unfortunately, as they say everybody has 20/20 hindsight.

I think a true entrepreneur has it's best ideas and makes the most happen when disaster is right around the corner.

Lou, Great quote from Walt Disney and look what they did. You never know what something big will jump out at you but you have to be ready to follow through.

I never heard this background story before about Walt Disney.  The stock for rent decision could have just as easily gone the other way and been the wise way to go. The building owner made his decision as best he could. You just never know. Most decisions are a gamble, some we win and some we lose!

Hi Lou,  We all have to make decisions in our lives.  Some may be bad decisions.  Walt had a vision and he decided to go for it and it paid off.  The landlord didn't have any vision and didn't go for it and regretted the choice.

All I could think of when I read "lightning"--was my husbands small plane was recently struck by lightning while sitting on its parking space.  Very true, you never know when lightning will strike!

Now I know this is a bit off topic, but your title got me. Last night we had a big storm. I was on the patio watching it and lightning struck so close. I haven't moved that fast in a long time. We had two strikes near the house. It was pretty exciting. I'm thankful there was a ton of rain to go with all of the lightning.

Lou Ludwig you reminded me of Paul Harvey - Rest of the Story!

And what a story! We all have to go through difficult times! And yes, if lightning had to strike on that owner of the building....
