Does Maverick Even Know When He’s in Timeout?

Our two golden retrievers, Rocky and Maverick (the Boys), keep life very interesting around my house.  Rocky is 5 ½ years old and Maverick is one year and 3 months.  Even though he is full grown, Maverick is still all PUPPY.  He excels at getting in trouble and getting a little too excited at certain situations.

Every other Monday, the Boys go for a day of day play at Come Sit Stay.  They love the indoor pool and just hanging with their furry pals.  Many times, Maverick’s name is on the grease board when we pick up the boards saying that he was a happy swimmer that day.  They both just wear themselves out and are pretty comatose for the rest of the evening.

The last time we picked up the Boys, the staff told us that Maverick had to go to “Timeout” twice during the day.  I’m not sure if he was playing too hard with the other dogs, or trying to get fresh with them.

 Maverick

I began to wonder just what exactly timeout consisted of.  Do they put him in a kennel and make him watch the other dogs play?  Or do they take him inside the building and make him sit in the corner with a dunce cap on?  Whatever they do, does Maverick even know that he is in timeout?

 Rocky

In all the years we have taken Rocky to Come Sit Stay, we have never been told that he had to go to timeout.  Rocky has always been a more laid back, easy going dude.  He rarely gets in trouble and if he does, it is probably because Maverick dared him to do something.

Maverick, on the other hand, is and always has been fearless.  He just doesn’t care and has certainly taken on the role of the alpha male between them.  If one of us is petting Rocky, Maverick pushes his way through and demands all the attention.

I guess when I think about it, Rocky is more like my husband Craig and Maverick is like me.  Pretty funny!

I hope Maverick can stay out of timeout in his future visits (but I doubt it).

Belinda,

What a cute post.  It is amazing how Maverick has grown.  What a handsome boy he is, as is Rocky.  Love how you compared them to the two of you.  A

Belinda -- there are answers needed as to Who, What, When, Where, Why and How  - behind Maverick's stay in TimeOut.   Conspiracy theories aside, I smell a snitch.   Hmm -- is Rocky smirking?

Hi Belinda - I am betting from that picture of Maverick that he knew he was on a timeout.  Somehow dogs can tell.

Hi Belinda - It sounds like Maverick and Grover would get along famously. We had a lab named Guido to whom Mary would give well-earned timeouts - she'd make him go sit in a corner - and he'd do it.

Come Sit Stay sounds like a dog's heaven! I hope him going in timeout isn't a reflection on their parents... LOL!

Oh boy. Have you had a discussion with Maverick about being nice at doggy daycare? LOL.

Lucky is at camp right now. I'm in GJ for meetings, so Lucky gets to hang at the kennel and run and play with the other dogs staying there. He loves it. Our kennel has an acre that is fenced for the dogs to play withing. Lucky is really worn out when he gets home.

Hello Belinda Spillman

You do have your hands full, but in a good way.  Now with our two newest rescue adopted pups coupled with our 18 month old puppy and the two old boys...there is very little quiet time in the house

The stories we could trade!! Our Golden pair are quite different in personality, too. I think they trade off "being in the doghouse",though. Each has a bad habit or two, but gosh so do my hubby and I! They sure love each other AND humans, something that I believe Goldens are known for.

Here's a photo I took yesterday late afternoon of Takoda, being ever so watchful of whatever was in the brush on Greasy Spoon Road.
