TUK TAC PDX, a blue moon Friday.

TUK TAC PDX a blue moon Friday.

Do you love trains? I do... I don’t take them nearly enough. I love kinda everything about them. What they are, the sounds they make, they’re on rails, they got the best horns... I shared a pic and talked a little about my F riday off adventure to Portland at: Day Tripper

My good friend Dave and I hung out in the Pearl District and we went to one of our all time favorite bookstores on the planet, Powell’s Books... We've both been going here since the 1970s.

So the video is kind of the bookends to that story... I caught some great morning footage at the Amtrak Tukwila station, and later that evening leaving Portland, crossing “The Mighty Columbia River” on a bridge back to my hood, Washington State.

There is a romance, I have it about trains. I can’t ride one that I don’t think about famous train movies like Murder on the Orient Express, The Train, Transsiberian, Von Ryan’s Express, The Lady Vanishes, etc. etc. and I remember the train rides we did as kids to Spokane from Seattle to see Grandma & Grandpa Larson.

Though science makes every good intentioned effort to remind me that those like me who believe “once in a blue moon” myth scenarios are (perhaps and somewhat) magical and mysterious, but hardly provable, yet this day it turns out quite special and with magic and I say, accept and enjoy. Who’s really to question the meaning of a blue moon? Afterall, this one was mine.

TUK = Tukwila, TAC = Tacoma and PDX = Portland

I've never been on the Sounder. The river would be really fun to cross. Thanks for sharing.

Trains are definitley neat, I haven't been on one since I was a kid though.  It seems that all kids are fascinated by trains, so no surprise that you still adore them.  I thought the blue moon in your post was going to be about you having a nice cold Blue Moon beer after a long trip, haha.

René - train rides in the Pacific Northwest can be quite an experience.  Not so much here in the Northeast Corridor.

Nicely done, Rene ---- I prefer shorter train trips - LAX to SAN or SBA.  Took a ride to OKJ from LAX -- too long for me although I didn't miss the TSA lines at the airport.

Last train we took was from LA to San Diego many years ago.  We are planning to take a train from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo, just so that we can see the coast that the Vanderberg Air Force Base occupies.  This area cannot be seen any other way unless you have access to the Air Force, except by train.  Friends have told us that it is really beautiful.  A

Hi John Manuwal ... Since you're in Woodinville, it's a toss up as to Tukwila or Seattle. Maybe Edmonds or Everett is closer? Parking in Tukwila is free. I love the scenery on the way to Portland and back, especially along Puget Sound and the Columbia River...

Hi Brian England ... and I like Blue Moon beers! It was one of those fun and delightful impromptu trips and a great way to spend a summer day.

Hi Grant Schneider ... I love the alternate views you get from the train. It doesn't follow the Interstate 5 Freeway all the time and meandors through the back areas. Some really great scenery along the way.

Hi Michael Jacobs ... Thanks! This run is 3 hours and just right for a get away for a day... Me too! Love the fact you can get your ticket online, park the car in the lot, show up a few minutes before the train leaves (not 2 hours before with security) and find your seat...

Hi A... Ron and Alexandra Seigel I would love to take that train from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo! Have a few friends who have done that and they say the views are over the top wonderful! It's only about a 2 hour trip, I think.

Hi René - I love trains too, and wish we had better service in this country. I ridden trains all over Europe, Asia, India and South America and enjoyed them all.

Me too Debbie Reynolds ... my brother and sister in law took the train from Seattle to Vancouver BC, then to Toronto a number of years ago. I'd like to do something like that and travel by train to the eastern seaboard like New York!

We have rail road tracks that run right by our subdivision and my girls and I walk down there to watch trains go by all the time.
