Where are the consumers???

I am throwing a big party for my step-daughter Saturday. She is recently engaged and we are having a get together to meet her soon to be in-laws. Needless to say, I have been shopping A LOT this past two weeks. All kinds of stores- party, craft, housewares, hardware, grocery, and big-box stores. I have noted that most stores are pretty empty. Even Wal-Mart was a ghost town today at 5 pm.

This gas crunch is really affecting consumer behavior. Food cost are up dramatically. In Griffin, GA today, regular unleaded gas was $3.41. The media is quick to point out corporation losses each quarter, but I was still shocked today when the cashier said to me, "I don't know what is going on, but this place has been dead all week... Maybe they know something we don't..."

Are any of you seeing the same thing around the country?

Yes, Beth!  I actually got in and out of Wal-Mart, with Alden mind you, in less than 20 minutes today :)

Definitely feeling it in NY.  Our gas price is at $3.59, if you hunt for it.  Just spoke with one of my neighbors this week and his business is so slow, he's doing mechanic work on the side.  Everyone is just trying to find a way to save money now.

Yes Beth, we went out to eat last week and the restraurants were much slower than normal. I am also cutting back.

In addition to my regular real estate career, I buy and renovate homes.  I spent this weekend driving around picking up the final materials to finish my latest incestment and searching for my next one.  In 3 days I spent $150 in gas.  It was sickening.

Actually the Denver area is doing pretty well. Our housing prices are holding their own, we have some decent job growth and I'm having my best year ever.
