Owasso (pronounced OH WAH SO), Oklahoma is a suburb located 8 miles north of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Owasso is an Indian word that means "End of the Trail" or turnaround because the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company ran a railroad line that ended in a Y shaped turnaround near the train depot.
The first train ran on the line in 1899, and since then, Owasso has grown to a community of just over 30,000. When we moved to Owasso, Oklahoma in 1997, there was a tiny WalMart, one grocery store and less than 10 stoplights. Today, Owasso has a Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s, Home Depot, an outdoor shopping mall called Smith Farm Marketplace and a nice variety of restaurants.
Owasso also has two hospitals, including Bailey Medical Center and this one, St John Owasso, which is connected to St John Hospital in Tulsa.
