Spotlight on Historic Radio Row!

New York City's Historic Radio Row existed from 1921 to 1966 in a warehouse district on the Lower West Side of Manhattan.

“Radio Row” is the nickname given to a street or district specializing in the sale of radio and electronic equipment/parts.

They existed in many major cities in the ‘20’s with the rise of broadcasting but declined in the 20th century.  In NYC, Radio Row was torn down in 1966 to make room for the World Trade Center. During it’s heyday, Radio Row was comprised of several blocks of electronics stores, with Cortlandt Street as its central axis.

40 to 50 stories, all with radios blaring at full blast, with components and electronic bits spilling out onto the street – that was the zenith of Radio Row’s popularity. But World War II and the lack of electronics cause a downturn but FM radios and television breathed new life into the area.

In the 1960’s however, Radio Row was demolished in preparation for the building of the World Trade Center.

Interesting.  I can just imagine walking those streets with that noise blasting over the sound of honking cabbies.
