One of my favorite sayings to my kids when they were growing up was that my money tree hasn't blossomed.

That's right you know young teenagers...they want...they need ...in their mind money grows on trees.

I smile because in my 30's for Christmas my parents gave me a money tree...that's right...it was a penny buried in some dirt.

I do have a green thumb but not this time...needless to say the boys hoped the money tree would blossom.

To this day...it's still a penny buried in dirt.

The computer scientist and I have decided to put ourselves on a tight budget.

That's right sometimes we spend as if the money is never ending....  We are the "live for the day" people...

I don't ever want to change that but I know deep down...it's important to live for the day...but budget for the future.

More restrictions...less spending and at times difficult to manage.

We've made a few changes because we have plans and goals...which caused me to pay attention to our habits..and come to realize we do in fact blow too much money.

So I thought today I would share with you...what we have done...and in a matter of a few weeks we have already seen the impact.

  • Normally we have take out or delivery at LEAST 4 days a week.  I do a lot everyday but as you can see cooking wasn't one of them.  Well that changed..and it hasn't been easy but the savings already has kept us both motivated.
  • We love shopping on E-bay...I can't say we go overboard but our electronics...computer systems and technology all are purchased there.  We decided we shop for things we need rather than things we want..its working out well...we see the benefits already.
  • I pack my lunch everyday which is a huge savings of at least $50.00 a week.  You gotta figure...cost of food...cost of delivery and yes I do tip good!
  • We practice earth hour every single day.  That's right we shut down...for one hour a day...and we see drastic reductions in our electric bill monthly.
  • Recently I received a 20% discount on my cell phone bill and will continue to do so as long as I am with CENTURY 21.  You would think I would have done this a long time ago...my flaw...my mistake..doesn't matter because I am saving now.
  • Now my little shopping sprees are no longer shopping sprees but getting what we need...that means...no more clearance items...no more I want items.  No shopping on a whim...we go prepared with list in hand.

These budget cuts alone have helped a lot and I find them to be less painful now as it was in the beginning.

Overspending can be a habit...one habit not hard to break if you look at the end results rather than look at the sacrifices.

Funny thing, my sons are now grown men...and somethings never change...

One of my sons said to me, Mom it's only 200.00 dollars, I told him hold your breath...and wait for the money tree to blossom.

I think he figured it out..he has to spend his own money!

Have you placed yourself on a budget?  What have you done to save?  Is it painful or are you looking at the end results to stay inspired?

C'mon Share with me...who knows...I may be able to save a few extra bucks!

I could save a thousand dollars a month just by cooking at home. I might take that up as a new hobby!

Midori,  Some great ideas.  Love the pic of the coin money tree.  Some people, I understand, will go further into debt when in a crunch situation because they will purchase for that 'high' they receive from it.  They know that they shouldn't and the high is only fleeting.  This is usually associated with depression if I'm not mistaken.  I had a friend who I think used to do that.

Midori - We, too, have begun to drastically change our spending habits.  We are also reading and listening to Dave Ramsey (Financial Peace University) in order to get completely out of debt.  I agree that eating at home is a big savings by itself!  Sorry I haven't called you back yet.  I just realized that I forgot to do that.

Midori - We MUST be on the same wavelength!  I love all your ideas and should share mine also in a post.  We have stopped take-out (unless it's an emergency) and I can't believe the savings.  I love your money tree photo.    My son is 14, so I guess I will be needing a new blooming tree too soon.

Midori....Cutting down on going out to eat, saves a lot....but alas I hate cooking : ) ....Working out of my home office, cuts down on my fuel bill. My office is 25 minutes away.

Midori- We have 2 17 year olds at home with us. I am reminded every day that the  money tree has not bloomed! =) My son did comment yesterday that he is tired of trying to keep up with his friends when it comes to toys.... (video games etc.) I am encouraged that he is starting to understand the importance of a budget and managing your money.

Best,

Scott

I am happy for this downturn in the economy.   It forces to remind us that being successful and happy is not about how much "stuff" you have.  There are so many greater and more meaningful things to life that we have been missing in the times of "more, better, and keeping up with the Jones".

"I am open to receive ALL of the abundance the universe offers!"

Peace,

Natascha

We've always had a good budget but we too realized how much we spend on restaurants and take outs. We too (okay, Gary) cooks more :) and we go out only once a week now. We traded Gary's SUV for a smaller car (gas) and we are buying what we need....less of the wants.

Thanks for the great reminder of money. How is it that you save on your cell phone bill because you are with Century 21? I would be interested in knowing. Anyway thanks for the insight

Marc-Yes I do know people like that myself but I can't say that I am one of them.  It's just I try and find ways to save myself time and sometimes saving time costs too much money.  One of my guilty pleasure's is 7-Eleven..sometimes I have really lazy day weekend and instead of doing the right thing and going to the grocery I spend the extra big bucks for convenience.  Oh thank heaven for 7- eleven but now I am trying to stay away from them.

Hi Sandra-I love cooking!  It's just it was so much easier to call out...Besides I can never make my salads as good as any restaurant.  I love when someone else cooks! :)

Natascha-For me it's really not about stuff..its about the luxuries..going away...take out...buying gifts..my first cut backs were in 2006..I stopped getting my nails done..going to the tanning bed...and getting my hair colored professionally...I have to say..it seems I really didn't give up much at all but at the time It was horrible.

Especially since I love my hair color...and I live very close to the beach...and now my nails are natural and nice.  I guess what I am trying to say..I have to get used to my own cooking again.. :)  We can't go out of town every weekend..but a year from now it won't even matter..and I will not have noticed...I will probably have to give up some things then to gain something new.  To me that is how you create change!

Midori, I have been cutting back on things that are a waste, I never drive through a fast food place to get a coke, soda, or pop, depending on which part of the country you are from. Also cutting back some marketing that is not producing results.

Midori,

You post is excellent food for thought and yes, I have taken a much closer look at our budget.  I'm considering the optin of "not" having cleaning ladies anymore.  At almost $100 a week, that is easily cut out of my budget and with hubby's help, we could probably do a great job ourselves.
