Apple is woking a a self driving car using a different technology and could be getting close to a proto type validation beta test. They have several hundred engineers working on an electric proto type in an east San Francisco Bay.
There is a site named GoMentum Station designated as a test site for this type of vehicles. There are many companies in SF Bay like Tesla, Google are working on this type of vehicles.
My personal feeling it is just another side project for cash rich companies to get Wall Street investors excited. If anything it won't take you no where with Apples "terrible" Maps which got me lost in Saratoga, CA yesterday. I had to use my realtor head to find my way around.
Apple, Tesla, and Goole are not the only players. Baidu, China's search engine giant is working a proto type that is due to unveil by year end with BMW.

PS: Google uses a Prius and added sensors. I made sure I was not on the same lane and steered clear off the car. This was several years ago. The rotating sensor on top is a laser (I think a Doppler device to detect objects). Software will recognize different objects, car, people, blinds, constructions to anticipate sudden intrusions to slow down or steer out of the way. See this video Google Self Driving Car
