Durham NC to revamp Historic District Review Criteria

By

Durham County and the city of Durham are overhauling the review criteria for local historic landmarks and districts.  This will affect future alterations on buildings, homes and vacant lots in some of the oldest neighborhoods.

The end result will be to clarify and consolidate the criteria and make the process more predictable and consistent.  This should make the nine member boards, the Historic Preservation Commission, job much easier as they will have more specific guidance on what is required of them.

As a Realtor® I am most interested in changes to the local historic districts which are groups of properties or neighborhoods that represent a particular type of development of period of time.  Durham has seven local historic districts which include Downtown Duram and six residential areas.  It is important for me to know where these districts are as buyers and sellers need to be aware the criteria in case they need to sell or purchase a property in one of them.

As a seller if you fix a property up to sell and do not get proper authorization you may have more expensive repairs on your hands.  As a buyer doing remediation on a property in one these districts could be a lot more expensive for you.

Check with me before buying or selling a property in Cleveland Street, Holloway Street, Fayetteville Street, Morehead Hills, Trinity Heights and Watts Hillandale.  These are clearly defined areas inside larger neighborhoods.
