Once again, I woke up to the news of wildfires on the move in Southern California. We are having a heat wave with very low humidity. The drought has also created a perfect environment for wildfires.
This morning the fires are in Simi Valley and near Glendora. The hot, dry conditions are making it very hard for firefighters.
While local residents cannot fight these fires themselves, it's a good time to be prepared if you live near an area that is fire prone. My cabin in Lake Arrowhead is always at risk so I'm well aware of the threat.
Some things to do:
- Create or maintain a barrier around the home that is clear of flammable material
- Keep valuables together and ready to go in the case of an evacuation order
- Water down (yes) dry areas near home to prevent flying embers from taking hold
Southern California residents are used to the fire season....and it might be a tough summer. We're hoping for that El Nino we've been promised this year.
