Remembering big hogs in a small town. Heard's Sausage. Searcy AR

Way back in the 60's Searcy AR had no playground equipment for parents to take kids to play on.

They could drive a distance and visit  a swimming hole called, if I remember right, The Bluff Hole, in Letona AR.  And there were probably some fishing holes where the kids could sit on the bank and throw a fishing pole in.  When my kids visited the city to see grandparents, the grandparents worked hard to try to find entertainment for the children. At times the kids were somewhat critical of the size of the fish.

Entertainment by grandparents

One of their favorite places to visit was Heard's Sausage.  They could see the biggest hogs in the world right there in the holding yards.  Of course, the hogs would soon be sausage but that was no concern for the kids.  They just loved seeing the hogs rooting around and grunting.  This picture reminded me of those days.  It was in a a 1954 Searcy High School yearbook.  Too bad they don't show a pig.

Barbara,

Searcy has certainly grown since the 60’s. I worked at KWCK radio in Searcy back in the early 70’s. When I go back now to visit I can’t believe how things have changed.

When I was a "little" girl, and visiting my grandmother, Nola Harrison, in Letona....she would take us to swim in (or at) The Bluff Hole in the late afternoon. Sometimes we would come upon boys swimming in the buff.....but she would honk her car horn and they would scatter fast. My memory is that, in wading into the water, there was a big drop off that would happen before you were ready. The water there was real cold. We would NEVER, EVER want to get out, when Grandmother said it was time to go home.

Bob, it was fun and I do wish we had a hog picture.

David, I remember when everyone listened to the radio.  I had someone trying to sell me ads on the radio and I had to turn them down because I feel so few people would ever hear the ad.

Anita, I am glad I named it right.  I wonder if we could find our way to that place again.  I did visit another old place not too long ago.  It was Slippery Rock Ford.  Remember it?

Harold described the swimmin' holes about as good as anyone could in a Searcyyesteryear piece.

ANOTHER ECHO FROM THE DELL

Harold Gene Sullivan

I don’t know why none of the others in my class, ’53, don’t remember Echo Dell, I remember it well. It was a great, isolated place on Little Red River where one could go to swim. I’m sure the roads have changed so much it would be difficult for me to find anymore but, when in we were in high school, it wasn’t too hard to find. One would take Main Street north just about as far as it would go, maybe it was to the end, well past the turn off the B-Rock and Camp Wildwood.

Then you had to walk a short ways across a field.

If I remember, they finally put one of the low-water dams, used to guarantee Searcy water in dry years, right at Echo Dell, which improved the swimming.

I may have started going there with my brother, A.,J., who is 6 years older, and Mom would make him take me along sometimes. Getting there did take a car, at least I never remember riding my bicycle out there.

This reminds me of several other swimming holes around Searcy. We did walk or ride our bikes to them. One was down on Deener Creek or Gin Creek, I never knew for sure what the name of the creek was. This creek ran just north of Searcy. The hole is not far from where the new high school is built. It wasn’t much of swimming hole, less than waist deep and muddy, but one could get wet in it. On that creek I spent many a summer day fishing and catching sunfish about 3” long.

Another swimming hole was one we called Ridge Hole. It was on the Cut, just north of Searcy on Hwy 16, east of the highway. It was almost head deep and fairly clear, except after a rain.

South of Searcy. on the Pumping Station road, there were two holes, one on Carbide Creek, just off the road. I’ve looked at it in recent years and cannot believe we swam in it. The other was on Des Arc Creek back of the Caldwell place (grandparents of “Cotton” Fuller). It was a very good hole, deep with rocks around it to dive off , and usually very clear.

The best of all was Bluff Hole out at Letonia, as I recall one had to drive through the West farm to get to it. We only went there after we had access to cars. It had a high bluff on one side so you could climb as high as you dared to before jumping off. The creek was very clear and deep. Bluff Hole is still my ideal when I think of swimming holes ... not that I think of swimming holes often.

Don, that is such a good swimming hole review written by Harold Gene.  I am going to print it off and see if my hubby remembers any of them.
