The Butterfly Passion

MONDAY MORNING MUSINGS

A bright orange butterfly hovers above the blossoms in my Flower Mound garden, a reminder of the mysteries of metamorphoses, but also the lovely beauty of the season. Butterflies are delicate beings but strong enough to go through the change. I am taken by its colors, patterns and shape. This winged creature gives me pause to enjoy something breathtaking and immediately endorphines rush to my brain. I am in awe!

Though the  weather in Texas is hot, I can't complain. There was a hummingbird outside my office window the other day and all work had to stop because moments like this don't come often. The compulsive desire to cease work for a just a moment caused no guilt. If it wasn't for a glass window it would have been just an arms length away from where I was sitting. The poet in me was inspired. I am thinking flying creatures in my garden are the result of a spiritual evolution of time and it makes my heart flutter. I am consumed with pleasure by this attraction to living things in my garden. All the hard work in the garden pays off. It is true, you reap what you sow...

Last night before sunset I saw a V formation in the sky. I'm not ready for the changing of the seasons. Typically, a scene like that comes much later in the fall. Birds in flight, birds in my garden - all an ensemble of feathers that give me joy. They remind me of the importance of staying mobile, light hearted, and to remain balanced. Feathers.... what is it about feathers that I find intriguing? Are they simply an insulation? Dress wear for birds? An aid to cause one to fly? I guess it depends on how you look at things. All this power from winged creatures gives me organic energy suggesting to live life in balance and harmony.

Moving to Flower Mound, Texas from cold Northern Climate brought about changes in me and it was the best move I ever made.  There's something in the air that causes wings to fly. Wings - to me they are symbolic of hope, free spirit, and peace. Kinship to nature begins in the garden, the array of beautiful colors, flowers, the majestic forest and trees. The flight of the butterfly or bird is empowering. The greatness of things with wings has inspired man since the beginning of time. Birds and butterflies seem to have remarkable power. My passion for life begins with the butterfly. They flutter; hover, rest, and fly to another destination. I've never seen a stationary bird or butterfly that doesn't keep moving. Have you?

Patricia what a lovely Monday Morning post!   You caused me to pause and think about how everytime I see a butterfly or hummingbird I pause and enjoy watching them! There is just something about bird watching that is so calming and refreshing.  Have a great day!

Oh yes Anna Banana Kruchten - you said it right "There is just something about bird watching that is so calming and refreshing."

I think what amazes me the most is how something like a humming bird, so small in size can even fly backwards, hover, soar, turn in midair - why they are like a Blue Angel Air show and those lucky enough to see it get their own private viewing!

And the butterfly - I am thankful they rest long enough to spread their wings to get good captures. They evoke such a sense of wonder! I'm glad we share the same passions! May you have a joyful and peaceful day!

Patricia,  I just love nature and the creatures in it. Birds, butterflies ... anything that flutters causes me to ponder the power of flight. Like you, I will stop what I am doing to take in the beauty of nature.

Patricia,

What a lovely post.  The Monarch butterflies have been dancing on our deck with great regularity as have the hummingbirds.  They are delight to watch as we sit and enjoy the last hours of daylight, each evening.  You are an inspiration and I am seconding Debb, here.  A

I have often soared with the birds in my mind... trying to envision what their eyes are seeing as they circle around the big trees on the farm.

What a beautiful thought Judi K Barrett - "Soared with the birds in my mind."

I really like that thought Judi! What if they were created to look out for us and we didn't even know? Would that make a difference in how we would treat the birds? We would open up our hearts and feed them more generously and frequently? Would people put away their guns and quit shooting them for no reason?

Did you write this just for me??? Patricia, we are SUCH kindred spirits and this post is like manna for my soul. I took photos of bugs in my garden tonite while watering, I took photos of beautiful pigeons high up and far-away spotted on the highest limbs in a cascading feathered fashion. Later, while home on the lake, I spoke with my hubby on the phone who's currently in Arkansas doing some consulting, when I heard and saw a big bird thump against one of our windows! I gasped and ran with the phone in one hand outside to help him.

I have done this often for smaller birds and more often than not, save them. This guy was BIG. He was a belted kingfisher. Gorgeous bird, and one that zips around here with it's high-pitched rat-a-tat-tat sound. I picked him up gently and enfolded him in my hands to calm him. I thought he was a goner. I still held him as he meagerly struggled. Then he became calm. I took him into the garage to get a bag (as you might have read in one of my past posts how to help a bird in shock) and as I took a plain brown bag in one hand he moved and then flew off just like that!! (Thank God my garage door was open!) I was SO happy!!! It took less than a minute, all told. Another successful save!

Here is what they look like. I have always wanted a photo of them, but this experience was equally as joyful and his feathers were incredibly soft and silky!

Belted kingfisherI have been graced with finding some stunning feathers that I keep in my truck. My clients see them--they're stuck into my levers for my heat vents...and lately I've found two really big feathers--hawk or owl, I think. I feel so very blessed when I find these. I even have Mallard Duck feathers stuck in some of my potted plants on my kitchen windowsill so that I can gaze at them often.

I sure loved this post, Patricia...could read it again and again and again...
